KENNEBUNKPORT — Southern Maine is noted for its fine food and restaurants, and Maine Foodie Tours is giving you — and your dog — an option to sample some of the area’s fine cuisine.

The company is hosting Doggie and Me tours on select Saturdays through the end of October. The tours begin around 3 p.m. and run about two hours long, said Maine Foodie Tours owner Pam Laskey.

Groups are kept small, she said. Dogs and owners walk to five locations that include pet stores and restaurants, and at each stop both dogs and their owners are given food to sample.

For example, one pet store will be serving cheese-flavored snacks that are edible for both humans and dogs, and a local cafe will serve whoopie pies to people and ice cream to dogs.

“It’s just a great way to get out and have fun,” said Laskey.

Laskey said people typically on the tours not only love their dogs, but they love dogs in general. She said its fun to watch tour goers meet other dogs, and mingle and share stories with other dog owners.

“They’re actually just a riot, to be honest with you,” said Laskey.

Laskey said a former manager came up with the idea of the dog foodie tours about five years ago. They’ve proved popular, and she hopes to expand the tours to Portland and Bar Harbor.

Proceeds from the tours benefit the Animal Welfare Society of West Kennebunk, which provides care to more than 4,000 animals a year, according to Marketing Associate Stephanie Kelley.

“People love to take vacations with their dogs,” said Kelley. Kennebunkport is a very dog-friendly area, and it’s only natural that people would want to visit the town with their dogs, she said.
