South Korean takes lead in first round at Las Vegas

Kim Meen-Whee birdied two of his final three holes Thursday for a 6-under 65 and a one-stroke lead in the PGA Tour’s Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at Las Vegas.

Meen-Whee, a 25-year-old South Korean, birdied all three par-5 holes, Nos. 13 and 16 on his first nine, and No. 9 on his second nine. Kim was fourth two weeks ago in South Korea in the PGA Tour’s CJ Cup.

John Huh was at 66 with J.J. Spaun, Ryan Blaum and Alex Cejka. Jimmy Stanger also was 5 under with three holes left when play was suspended because of darkness.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Joost Luiten, Haydn Porteous and Nicolas Colsaerts shot 7-under 64s to tie for the lead after the first round of the Turkish Airlines Open at Antalya, Turkey.

TENNIS

PARIS MASTERS: Rafael Nadal remained on track for the title by beating Pablo Cuevas 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals.

Nadal han’t reached the final in the event since losing to David Nalbandian in his first appearance 10 years ago. Nadal improved to 4-1 overall against Cuevas and next plays a Serbian qualifier, Filip Krajinovic, for the first time.

ELITE TROPHY: CoCo Vandeweghe, Ashleigh Barty and Anastasija Sevastova advanced to the semifinals at the WTA event at Zhuhai, China.

EUROPA LEAGUE: AC Milan wasted a chance to make the knockout stage with two games to spare after AEK Athens held it to a second straight goalless draw, in Greece.

The other favorite, Arsenal, advanced despite also being in a goalless game, in London against Red Star Belgrade.

• Marseille defender Patrice Evra was ejected before a Europa League game in Guimaraes, Portugal, for apparently kicking a fan in the head. Video footage showed Evra lashing out at one of his own club’s fans – one of a group of people that scaled barriers and reached the edge of the field to complain about the team’s performances.

ITALIAN LEAGUE: Napoli’s hope for the title took a hit as left back Faouzi Ghoulam tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

BASKETBALL

NBA: Klay Thompson scored 27 points, Kevin Durant had 24 and the visiting Golden State Warriors overcame a lethargic first half to beat the San Antonio Spurs, 112-92.

Steph Curry added 21 points for Golden State in its first meeting with the Spurs since sweeping the Western Conference finals.

• Cleveland Cavaliers forward Tristan Thompson could be out for a month because of a strained left calf.

COLLEGE: Georgia Tech suspended starters Tadric Jackson and Josh Okogie indefinitely after learning they accepted benefits in violation of NCAA rules.

HORSE RACING

BREEDERS’ CUP: The weekend kicks off with four stakes Friday, topped by the $2 million Distaff, as Del Mar in California hosts the season-ending championships for the first time.

Friday is the warmup for Saturday when the seaside resort track presents nine more, culminating with the $6 million Classic where defending winner Arrogate is favored.
