I’m writing regarding the Nov. 2 article about the town of Wells debating whether to change the Wells High School mascot, an Indian Warrior.
All the folks interviewed who think that the mascot is just fine are, like me, white.
The last two paragraphs of the article mention Harry Tomah, a Maliseet Native American who taught at Wells High School for over 30 years, and how he tried to work within the district to stop the misrepresentation of his people with the mascot. This information alone should be all the answer the Wells-Ogunquit Community School District needs to realize the insult they are perpetuating.
Get rid of the Warrior! Our ignorance is showing.
