BIDDEFORD — Etta M. Messier, 95, of Biddeford died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017, at Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford.

She was born on Aug. 30, 1922, to Edward and Esther (Kavanaugh) Lockwood in Morristown, New Jersey. After graduating high school, she went on to nursing school.

On Sept. 26, 1944, she married Jean M. Messier at Our Lady of Carmel Church in Boonton, New Jersey. They spent 55 years together until his death on April 11, 1999.

She worked as an R.N. until her retirement in 1978. Jean and Etta moved to Biddeford in 1993. She enjoyed reading, sewing, and knitting.

She is preceded in death by: two brothers, Edward and George Lockwood; and two sisters, Marie Brett and Melissa Magill.:

Etta is survived by four sons, Harvie Messier of Hawaii, John Messier and his wife Gale of Cedar Grove, New Jersey, William Messier of Biddeford, and Gerard Messier of Sparta, New Jersey; two  daughters, Patricia Crowell of Cherry Hills, New Jersey, and Suzanne Ronan of Biddeford; a sister, Eileen Kochman of Toms River, New Jersey; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; as well as multiple nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17, 2017 at Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm St., Biddeford, ME 04005.

A Mass of a Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2017, at St. Anne’s Chapel at St. Joseph Church in Biddeford. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Biddeford.
