Longtime Falmouth boys’ basketball coach Dave Halligan reached the rarefied air of 500 career victories Tuesday evening when the Yachtsmen won at Biddeford, 45-32, to improve to 3-1 on the young season. Halligan, a Falmouth High graduate, started coaching at his alma mater in 1987, when Ronald Reagan was still President and Tom Brady was 10-years-old. He’s led the Yachtsmen to six Gold Balls (three in Class C, two in Class B and one in Class A) and in addition to his excellence on the hardcourt, has 449 soccer coaching victories to his credit in 31 seasons with Falmouth and eight at Cape Elizabeth.

“It means a lot,” Halligan said. “It means I’m old and it means we’ve had a lot of very good players and good people. I’ve achieved a lot more than I ever expected. I’ve been fortunate to have the support of the administration. Being from Falmouth, it’s special and it’s close to my heart, but this story is about (the kids).”
