MIDDLETOWN, R.I. — The town council in Middletown has rejected a measure setting height limits on new houses.
The Newport Daily News reports the council voted 6-1 to not move forward with the proposal during a meeting Monday.
The ordinance would have limited the height of new homes built on lots less than 10,000 square feet to 25 feet instead of 35 feet.
The council had previously been split on the issue.
Some members of the community’s Easton’s Point neighborhood said the measure would limit larger homes and in turn decrease the amount of property taxes those homes generate. Others said the town’s largest residences are “ghost homes” that limit the area’s appeal.
