LOWELL, Mass. — UMass-Lowell pulled away with a closing 16-5 run Wednesday night to defeat the University of Maine 88-76 in men’s basketball. The Black Bears have lost four straight.

Matt Harris tossed in a 3-pointer 5:31 into the second half, giving the River Hawks (11-16, 5-9 America East) a 56-55 lead over Maine (6-23, 3-11).

Lowell maintained a slight edge until pulling away in the final 6:26.

Jahad Thomas led the River Hawks with 26 points.

Aaron Calixte led the Black Bears with 18.

(1) VIRGINIA 65, GEORGIA TECH 54: Ty Jerome scored 18 points and the host Cavaliers (25-2, 14-1) held off the Yellow Jackets (11-17, 4-11), clinching the regular season title and top seed next month in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.

Ben Lammers scored 22 points to lead the Yellow Jackets, who lost their sixth in a row and 10th in the last 11 games. Tadric Jackson added 15.

(4) XAVIER 89, GEORGETOWN 77: Naji Marshall scored a career-high 21 points as the visiting Musketeers (25-4, 13-3 Big East) topped the Hoyas (15-11, 5-10).

(10) NORTH CAROLINA 78, SYRACUSE 74: Theo Pinson scored a career-high 23 points, Joel Berry II added 18, including the tie-breaking layup with 1:36 left, and the Tar Heels (22-7, 11-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat the Orange (18-10, 7-8) at Syracuse, New York.

OKLAHOMA STATE 79, (6) TEXAS TECH 71: Kendall Smith scored 21 points to help the host the Cowboys (16-12, 6-9 Big 12) stun the Red Raiders (22-6, 10-5).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

(1) UCONN 91, TULANE 47: Azura Stevens scored 23 points, Napheesa Collier scored 22 and the Huskies (27-0, 14-0 American) topped the Green Wave (12-15, 4-10) for their 50th straight road win.

BASEBALL

CAL LUTHERAN 17, BATES 2: Zach Bullard’s grand slam in the bottom of the eighth capped a six-run inning and a 17-run game for the Kingsmen (6-5) as they dominated Bates (0-4) in Thousand Oaks, California.

The Bobcats scored their runs in the top of the third. Will Sylvia singled home Connor DiVincenzo and then scored on Jack Arend’s single.
