CLERMONT, Fla. — Claire McCarthy lined an RBI double in the fourth inning, Caroline Rice hit a run-scoring single in the fifth, and Bowdoin got past Western New England 2-0 in a nonconference softball game on Sunday.

Kate Hoadley pitched a complete game for the Polar Bears (5-2), striking out four while holding the Golden Bears (1-3) to five hits and a walk.

Lauren O’Shea walked and stole second before scoring the go-ahead run on McCarthy’s double in the fourth. Emma Stevens reached on an error in the fifth, advanced to second on a sacrifice and took third on a passed ball before coming home on Rice’s hit.

Natalie Edwards had two of Bowdoin’s five hits.

The Polar Bears defeated Farmingdale State 9-1 earlier in the day.

USM 11, WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON 5: Hannah Kenney launched a two-run homer during a three-run first inning and added a single during a four-run second as Southern Maine defeated the Presidents (0-5) in Clermont, Florida.

Kenney had three hits and four RBI to pace a 15-hit attack. Erin Martin added three hits, Amber Kelly had two hits and two RBI, and Brooke Cross had three RBI and scored twice.

CLARKSON 9, USM 4: Michele Winn hit a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth to highlight an eight-run inning as Clarkson (2-8) rallied from a 4-1 deficit to beat the Huskies (4-6) in their second game of the day.

Taylor Lux hit a two-run double for Southern Maine.

BASEBALL

NEW MEXICO STATE 8, MAINE 5: Noah Haupt’s two home runs led the Aggies (13-8) past Maine (4-17) in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Cody Pasic, Danny Casals and Colin Ridley hit solo home runs for the Black Bears in a game featuring wind gusts of more than 30 miles per hour.

Casals finished with three hits.

USM 13, FRANKLIN & MARSHALL 5: Jason Komulainen and Kyle Heath each drove in four runs for the Huskies (5-5), who pulled away with a sixth-run sixth against the Diplomats (5-7-1) in Winter Haven, Florida.

Andrew Olszak, Jake Dexter and Devin Warren combined for eight hits and three RBI while scoring three times each for Southern Maine.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

USM 10, COLBY-SAWYER 8: Aliza Jordan had two goals and an assist during a 4-0 second-half run that gave the Huskies (2-2) a 10-7 lead over the Chargers (3-2) at St. Joseph’s College in Standish.

Jordan finished with three goals and two assists. Allison Irish also had three goals.

Jordan tied the game with 18:46 remaining, then set up Alex Farley for the go-ahead strike at 14:59 before adding a free-position goal at 11:13. Irish made it a three-goal advantage at 6:59 as the shot clock was winding down.

BOWDOIN 18, PLYMOUTH STATE 3: Katherine Miller fired home four goals, Kara Finnerty added three goals and two assists, and the Polar Bears’ (5-1) dominated Plymouth State (1-2) in the second half at Brunswick.

The Panthers took a 3-1 lead in the opening 13 minutes, but Miller scored twice as Bowdoin closed the half on a 3-0 run. The Polar Bears then controlled the second half, holding the Panthers to a single shot.

TUFTS 11, COLBY 9: Emily Games scored twice and had three assists for Tufts (4-0, 2-0 NESCAC) against the Mules (1-3, 0-3) in Waterville.

Colby’s Sasha Fritts had five goals and one assist. Kendall Smith added two goals for the Mules.
