BASEBALL

The University of Maine scored four runs in the first inning Sunday and went on to a 17-1 victory against Albany, finishing a three-game America East sweep at Mahaney Diamond in Orono.

Christopher Bec led the way for the Black Bears (8-19, 4-2) with five hits and four RBI, including two home runs. He hit a solo homer in the third and added a three-run shot in the eighth to finish the scoring against the Great Danes (9-11, 1-5).

Nick Silva (2-2) earned the win, striking out eight in six innings.

SOFTBALL

COLLEGE: Rachel Carlson and Maddie Decker each drove in two runs to lead Maine (12-14, 3-0 America East) to a 6-2 victory against Hartford (6-12, 0-3) at West Hartford, Connecticut.

Carlson hit an RBI triple in the fifth inning to put Maine ahead 5-0. Annie Kennedy earned the win, allowing one earned run with four strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

TENNIS

MIAMI OPEN: John Isner won the biggest title of his 14-year career, holding every service game and rallying past Alexander Zverev in the final at Key Biscayne, Florida, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-4.

Isner, 32, previously had been 0-3 in ATP Masters 1000 finals. His breakthrough came in the last singles match on Key Biscayne before the tournament is moved next year to the Miami Dolphins’ NFL stadium.

FOOTBALL

NFL: Quarterback Geno Smith agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Smith will likely join former Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones in backing up Phillip Rivers.

SOCCER

SPANISH LEAGUE: An Albacete club official said midfielder Pelayo Novo faces a “very slow” recovery after falling from the third floor of the team’s hotel.

Novo fell into an open space by a set of stairs in an interior area of the hotel, reportedly while leaning on a railing and using his phone.

PORTUGUESE LEAGUE: Benfica fans can breathe a sigh of relief. The team’s mascot eagle is back. A day after one of the team’s eagles unexpectedly flew away during a prematch ceremony, the club said the bird had returned unharmed. The eagles are released before home matches, fly around the stadium and are supposed to return to a trainer standing near midfield, but the bird used Saturday flew out of the stadium and kept going.

PREMIER LEAGUE: Dele Alli scored twice in four minutes to end Tottenham’s 28-year wait for a victory at Chelsea with a 3-1 win at London. Tottenham extended its lead over Chelsea for fourth place – and the fourth Champions League position for next season – to eight points.

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

UFC EVENT: Max Holloway will attempt to become a two-division champion when he steps in for the injured Tony Ferguson at UFC 223 in New York on Saturday.

Holloway (19-3) will fight Khabib Nurmagomedov (25-0) for the lightweight title in the main event at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, the group announced.

CYCLING

TOUR OF FLANDERS: Niki Terpstra continued his fine form by winning with a well-timed late attack at Oudenaarde, Belgium, becoming the first Dutch rider in more than 30 years to capture the race.
