The Department of Homeland Security’s practice of separating migrant children from their parents at our borders is now official U.S. policy. In the first 14 days of this government’s new policy, over 650 children – as young as 53 weeks old – have been torn from their families, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection official Richard Hudson.
This is beyond wrong. Imagine the terror of a young child being led away from a parent who has been their source of love and nurture the whole of their life. The majority of families who risk entering our borders do so out of desperation. They are not criminals.
How can we hold up our collective head among the other nations of the world when we act so despicably? Those without compassion and decency in their hearts do not deserve to govern.
