STILLWATER, N.J. — Janet Elizabeth Smith, 76, passed away Tuesday in Stillwater, New Jerrsey, with the company of her daughter Lydia, son-in-law John, and granddaughter Saffron Bessler.

Janet was a longtime resident of Biddeford, Maine, where she enjoyed gardening, reading, visiting the beach, and shopping at Market Basket. Steep Falls, Maine was Janet’s childhood home. She attended Fryeburg Academy and Plymouth College.

She settled in Derry, New Hampshire, where she raised two daughters, Kristen and Lydia Gould. She was active in local politics, founding the Citizens’ Action Committee. Janet returned to Maine and made her home there since the mid 1980s. She happily resided at the MacArthur Home on Elm Street.

She is survived by her two daughters, Kristen Burnham and Lydia Gould Bessler, two sons-in-law Keith Burnham and John Bessler, and three grandchildren, Evan Burnham, Greg Burnham, and Saffron Bessler.
