SOUTH PORTLAND — Independence Day events in town will kick off Wednesday morning with barbecue and a classic car show.

Hosted by the historical society in collaboration with Yankee Ford, the 11th annual Independence Day Classic Car Show will be on display from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in Bug Light Park.

The Cushing’s Point Museum will open at 10 a.m. and grilling will begin at 11 a.m. Hot dogs, hamburgers, veggie burgers, sausage sandwiches and more will be available, with proceeds to benefit the museum.

At the event, bidding on the 9th annual Summer in Maine Auction will take place, with bids closing at 1 p.m. The auction is the historical society’s major fundraiser, which features the best that Maine has to offer in the summer, such as cruises, golf, theater, museums, hotels, restaurants and other summertime activities.

The city’s Parks, Recreation & Waterfront Department will host a fireworks show at the park, accompanied by food trucks and games.

Activities include a slime booth from Mad Science, face painting from Party Palooga, lawn games and music. The event starts around 5:30 p.m., with the fireworks set for 9:15 p.m.

The park will be closed to all but boat traffic at 4:30 p.m. However, those who need handicapped parking will be accommodated.

Parking is available on a first-come, first-serve basis at the nearby Southern Maine Community College student parking lot on Broadway.
