ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Sergio Romo relieved in the eighth inning, shifted to third base when Jonny Venters replaced him in the ninth, then struck out Brett Gardner to end the game with two on and give the Tampa Bay Rays a 3-2 win over the New York Yankees on Wednesday.

With scheduled Rays starter Nathan Eovaldi traded to AL East-leading Boston about two hours before game time, six pitchers combined on a seven-hitter.

New York has lost just two series since May, and both were against the Rays. Tampa Bay swept three games in late June, took two of three this week and has won six of its last seven against the Yankees. New York, 14-14 over its last 28 games.

The Rays took a 3-1 lead in the sixth when Kevin Kiermaier hit a two-run homer off Luis Cessa (1-2) and C.J. Cron added a solo drive against Jonathan Holder.

TWINS 12, BLUE JAYS 6: Max Kepler drove in the tiebreaking run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in a six-run 11th inning, and Minnesota completed its first sweep at Toronto in more than 15 years.

Mitch Garver went 4 for 6 with a homer and five RBI for Minnesota.

TIGERS 8, ROYALS 4: Mike Moustakas had two hits, including a run-scoring double, as the Royals fell to Detroit in what might have been Moustakas’ final home game for Kansas City.

With the Royals last in the AL Central, Moustakas could be dealt before Tuesday’s deadline.

Jose Iglesias hit a three-run homer for Detroit, and Victor Martinez had three hits.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

CUBS 2, DIAMONDBACKS 1: Jon Lester bounced back from his worst start of the season with six strong innings and the Cubs secured a win at home after scoring the go-ahead run in the eighth on Arizona shortstop Nick Ahmed’s throwing error.

Lester allowed one run on four hits while striking out seven and walking none in six-plus innings, but was matched by a strong outing by Arizona’s Robbie Ray, who went seven innings.

NATIONALS 7, BREWERS 3: Bryce Harper tied for the NL lead with his 25th home run, Tanner Roark pitched eight scoreless innings to end a seven-start winless streak, and Washington avoided a sweep at Milwaukee.

Roark (4-12) allowed three hits, struck out a season-high 11 and walked one.

PHILLIES 7, DODGERS 3: Scott Kingery homered and Carlos Santana hit a three-run triple in Philadelphia’s five-run fifth inning, leading the Phillies to a victory at home.

Rhys Hoskins also went deep for the Phillies, and Jake Arrieta (8-6) allowed two earned runs on five hits in six innings for the victory.

REDS 7, CARDINALS 3: Eugenio Suarez homered for the third straight game, Tucker Barnhart added a two-run shot and Cincinnati powered past visiting St. Louis.

Sal Romano (6-8) allowed two runs in six innings to give the Reds consecutive series wins over St. Louis for the first time since 2011.

METS 6, PADRES 4: Rookie Corey Oswalt beat his hometown Padres for his first major league win in six appearances, pitching three-hit ball over five innings as host New York earned its first series win in two months.

Oswalt (1-2) allowed two runs and two walks while striking out four, leaving after 62 pitches.

INTERLEAGUE

INDIANS 4, PIRATES 0: Trevor Bauer struck out 10 in seven innings, and Brad Hand got his first save for the host Indians, who stopped Pittsburgh’s winning streak at 11.

Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run single in the third inning, and Yonder Alonso hit a two-run homer in the eighth.

MARINERS 3, GIANTS 2: Jean Segura chopped the first pitch from Sam Dyson into center field to score Guillermo Heredia with the go-ahead run in the eighth, and host Seattle won yet another one-run game.

Alex Colome (3-5) pitched the eighth inning, and Edwin Diaz struck out the side in the ninth for his league-best 38th save in 41 chances. Seattle improved to 27-12 in one-run games this season.
