Defending girls’ champion Lily Horne of Freeport and Lisandro Berry-Gaviria of Mt. Ararat are the top seeds for the third edition of the Beach to Beacon High School Mile, heading a list of 17 girls and 19 boys invited to participate in this year’s races next Friday.

Horne, a rising senior, won last year’s girls’ race in 5 minutes, 28.8 seconds. She also swept the 1,600 and 3,200 meters at the Class B outdoor state meet in June, and won the Class B cross country championship in the fall.

Horne’s seed time is 5:13, which is matched by Christine Toy of Bonny Eagle, who finished third in Class A in the 1,600. Other top girls’ entrants include Class B indoor mile and 2-mile champion Carolyn Todd of Greely, and two of Toy’s teammates – Class A indoor 2-mile champion Ami Beaumier and indoor mile runner-up Kayla Raymond.

Berry-Gaviria is coming off a dominant sophomore season in which he won five individual Class A state championships: cross country, indoor mile and 2-mile, and outdoor 1,600 and 3,200 meters. His seed time for the Beach to Beacon mile is 4:23.

The boys’ field also includes the second- and third-place finishers in the Class A 1,600 – Alec Troxell of Deering and Aiden Willey of Bonny Eagle.

The boys’ mile is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Fort Williams in Cape Elizabeth, with the girls’ race to follow at 4:15.
