Farmers market opens

Something exciting will be happening in New Gloucester beginning on Saturday, Sept. 1. The New Gloucester Farmers Market will be held at the New Gloucester Fairgrounds on Saturdays, Sept. 1, through Oct. 13, from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

Competitive Diamond Cheering

From Tuesday, Sept. 18 to late March 2019, Competitive Diamond Cheering will be conducted for children Pre-K through eighth grade at the Memorial School Gym, 86 Intervale Road. The Diamond Minis program is for Pre-K through second-grade students, Diamond Chips is for third- and fourth-graders, Big Diamonds for fifth- and sixth-graders, and Super Diamonds for seventh- and eighth-graders.

The cost is $156 for the season and can be paid in two installments; $78 upon registration and $78 by Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019. Cheer Tumbling and Gymnastics

Cheer Tumbling and Gymnastics lessons will be given by Becky Norton at the Memorial School Gym, 86 Intervale Road, from Thursday, Sept. 20 through Thursday, Oct. 25. The program will include proper stretching, strength building, tumbling, beam and vault, at a cost of $32 per child.

History Barn open house

The next monthly New Gloucester History Barn Open House, 383 Intervale Road, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 1, from 9 a.m. to noon. New Gloucester residents are encouraged to come and learn more about their historic neighborhood exhibits. The vehicle collection is on permanent display. The open house is free and open to the public.

Buy an apple pie

The annual New Gloucester Historical Society apple pie sale will be held on Friday, Sept. 21. Local Thompson’s apples will be transformed into culinary classics created by local bakers.

Pre-orders are required, so call Avis Ford at 926-4561 to reserve your pie(s). Pick-up is between 2-6 p.m. at the NG Congregational Church vestry, 19 Gloucester Hill Road. This fundraiser is a fall tradition.

Hike for Ike

New Gloucester resident Isaac Blake, 19, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 7 years ago. He has finished his first year away at college and dealing with the challenges of refilling all his prescriptions, making sure he has enough supplies, and frequently monitoring his glucose levels.

The Blake family encourages people to support the annual Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraiser in Saco. Donations are to fund research for advanced treatments and, hopefully, a cure.

His mother Shelley Blake writes, “In my own way, I pray that helping raise funds will eventually find a cure, hopefully in Isaac’s  lifetime. I would so love to give him the gift of a more carefree life, free of the constant thought process associated with T1D.”

The Hyssongs in concert

The Hyssongs will present a concert of gospel music at New Gloucester Bible Church located, 218 Lewiston Road, on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 6 p.m.

Dell, Susan and Richard Hyssong travel full time as the award-winning Hyssongs. Their energetic ministry combines family vocal harmony, humor and trumpet and trumbone. They have been singing together as a family for 22 years.  CDs will be sold and an offering will be collected to help with their ministry.
