The number of persons seeking shelter for whom we are not able to serve is one of the principal reasons Tedford has proposed a new facility with a larger service and bed capacity. Only 7 percent of families and 19 percent of adults requesting emergency housing are sheltered.

The number of homeless and unaccompanied youth under the age of 18 is growing in the region and is a serious issue. Tedford is not able to serve this group of people in its emergency housing facilities. Fortunately, a group of citizens from the area is designing a host-home model for this group. The Merrymeeting Project of Tedford Housing continues to serve this group on an outreach basis, and the three area school districts also have services and systems in place to support this group to stay in school. The need, though, continues to far outstretch these limited resources.

The family emergency housing facility in Brunswick serves only households composed of parents with their children. Single and dual-person households with no children are served at the single-adult facility in Brunswick. A group of single persons would not be able to occupy a unit designed for parents with children.

The mission of Tedford Housing – “… creating pathways from homelessness to home …” – is supported in so many ways by many sectors of the Brunswick community for which we and the people we serve are so very grateful.
