BIDDEFORD — The Bowdoin College women’s lacrosse team suffered a 16-12 setback to Amherst on Saturday afternoon in a game played at the University of New England.

The Polar Bears fell to 1-1 (1-1 NESCAC), while the Mammoths improved to 2-1 (1-1 NESCAC).

Amherst came out firing, building an early three-goal lead in the first 7:49 of the contest.

Bowdoin got on the board with a goal by Katie Miller, but Amherst answered with a 3-1 surge, sparked by a pair of goals by Leah Ritterband.

The Polar Bears replied by closing the half on a 4-2 run, including a goal by Miller with 1:14 remaining in the opening frame to cut the gap to 8-6 at halftime.

After an Amherst score to open the second half, Fiona Bundy tallied consecutive goals to make it a one-goal game, 9-8, with 27:31 left in regulation.

The Mammoths stemmed the tide with a 6-2 surge over the next 15 minutes, extending the lead to 15-10 on a goal by Hannah Gustafson with 8:31 to go.

Bowdoin was led by five goals from Bundy. Miller had three goals and one assist in the loss for the Polar Bears. Morgan Pinado had eight draw controls, while Caroline Maxwell had two caused turnovers.

Talia Land had nine saves for the Mammoths, while Erin Morrissey made 13 saves for the Polar Bears.

Amherst held a 33-29 edge in shots.

Bowdoin heads south to play Franklin & Marshall in Englewood, Florida., at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

Bowdoin opened the 2019 season with a doubleheader setback against Brandeis, falling 4-2 and 9-3.

The Polar Bears (0-2) head to California, opening the trip at Pomona-Pitzer on Thursday at 4 p.m.

In the opener, Luke Hall put the Judges (2-0) on the board with an RBI groundout to short, driving in Isaac Fossas in the second. Brandeis doubled its lead in the following inning, this time off an RBI single from Mike Khoury.

The Polar Bears tied the game in their next at-bat. Jack Wilhoite walked to put a runner on base and Austin Zakow homered to left for the pair.

The Judges responded with a pair of solo homers in the bottom half of the inning off the bats of Hall and Dan O’Leary.

Brandon Lopez suffered the loss on the mound, allowing four hits with as many strikeouts. Lopez walked a pair.

Greg Tobin pitched a complete game and gave up three hits and three walks. Tobin fanned a pair.

Brandeis rolled in the second game after spotting Bowdoin a 1-0 first-inning lead on a Lopez RBI double that scored Brendan O’Neil.

The Judges responded with three in the bottom half of the inning off three singles.

Bowdoin’s Chris Attisani plated Wilhoite in the second to cut the deficit to one.

Brandeis scored a pair in the second and third and tacked on a solo shot to right in the fifth.

Attisani drove in Bowdoin’s final run in the top of the sixth, doubling to right.

Brandeis matched the tally with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Attisani and Lopez both recorded doubles.

Ryan Winn started the game and pitched one inning with a pair of strikeouts. Andrew Cohen and Colby Lewis each pitched two innings. Lewis fanned five. Michael Webber finished off the final inning on the mound.

Indoor track

The Bowdoin women’s distance medley relay earned All-American honors, while the 4 x 400-meter relay team qualified for the finals on day one of the NCAA Division III Championship Friday night.

The DMR team of Delaney Bullock, Sara Ory, Claire Traum and Caroline Shipley posted a time of 11:50.25 to take eighth place, earning All-American honors for the second year in a row. Bullock opened in the 1,200 in 3:37 before handing to Ory for a 58.8 400 leg. Claire Traum went 2:17 on a leg that included a lot of contact with other runners before Caroline Shipley closed with a 4:55.7.

In the 4 x 400 meter prelims, the 12th-seeded Polar Bears vaulted to sixth place and qualified for Saturday’s finals with a solid time of 3:52.41. Emma Beene led off with a 58.4 and handed off in third place to Morgen Gallagher, who held third with a leg of 58.2. Samantha Schaefer passed off in third with a 58.1 before Ory moved the Polar Bears from third to second with a 57.5 on the anchor leg.

Men’s lacrosse

Amherst pulled away in the second and third quarter of a 22-9 win over Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears suffered their first loss and dropped to 2-1 (1-1 NESCAC), while Amherst moved to 3-0 (2-0 NESCAC).

Bowdoin took the early lead, getting goals from Jake Crossman and Zach Chandler to take a 2-0 advantage just 4:22 into the contest.

Amherst rallied, scoring five straight goals to end the quarter and took a 6-2 advantage following the first goal of the second quarter.

After Bowdoin got a goal from Chandler, Amherst rolled off six more goals before halftime to take a 12-5 edge at the break.

The Mammoths put the contest away with an 8-1 third quarter en route to the win.

Sam Langan, Chandler and Will Murtag scored two goals apiece for Bowdoin.

Jack O’Connor made nine saves in 41:12 for Bowdoin before giving way to Michael Covell, who made four saves in 18:48.

Matt Solberg led Amherst with four goals and six assists.

Sam Carlin won 15-of-29 faceoffs for the Polar Bears.

Bowdoin will look to get back into the win column on Wednesday night when the Polar Bears head to Babson for a 5 p.m. start.
