ORANGE, Calif. — The Bowdoin College men’s tennis team cruised to a season-opening 9-0 win at Chapman University on Sunday.

The third-ranked Polar Bears (1-0) took control with a sweep of doubles play, getting an 8-0 shutout win from Grant Urken/Jerry Jiang at No. 1, and 8-3 wins from Justin Wang/Larry Zhao and Justin Patel/Oscar Yang at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, respectively.

The Polar Bears posted straight-set victories at all six singles spots with Urken posting a 6-1, 6-4 victory at the top spot. Jiang, Yang, Wang, Justin Patel and Evan Fortier accounted for the other victories for Bowdoin as the Polar Bears didn’t lose a set.

Bowdoin returns to action against Skidmore today in Whittier, Calif.

Women’s tennis

Bowdoin defeated Vassar in its spring break opener on Sunday at Palm Springs, California.

The Polar Bears, ranked 16th in the latest Division III poll, improved to 1-1 overall with the win.

Bowdoin’s Tasha Christ and Devon Wolfe earned an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles while Izzy Essi/Julia Marks posted an 8-3 win at No. 2 for the Polar Bears. Bowdoin completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win by Fleming Landau and Sasa Jovanovic.

Bowdoin clinched the win with victories at five of the six singles spots, courtesy of Christ (6-2, 6-1), Wolfe (6-4, 7-6), Essi (6-2, 6-1), Jovanovic (6-0, 6-0) and Landau (6-1, 6-0).
