BABSON PARK, Mass. — The Bowdoin College men’s lacrosse team scored the first seven goals of the game and cruised to a 19-8 non-conference win over Babson on Wednesday evening.

The Polar Bears improved to 3-1, while the Beavers fell to 2-4.

Bowdoin scored seven times in a span of 5:01 to take complete command of the game. Chris Fowler scored twice in the run and added an assist. Will Murtagh scored once and added a helper to give the Polar Bears the early lead. Sam Carlin capped the first quarter with a goal to give the visitors an 8-2 lead after one frame.

The teams traded three goals apiece in the second quarter as Bowdoin owned an 11-5 at the break.

The Polar Bears put the game away in the third quarter, scoring five unanswered goals. Brad Ingersoll, Sam Langan, Zach Chandler, Jeff Powers and Fowler accounted for the scores as Bowdoin extended their lead to as many as 13 goals in the fourth quarter on their way to the win.

Fowler led Bowdoin with four goals and an assist, while Powers and Sam Langan had three goals apiece for the Polar Bears. Murtagh had a goal and four assists to spark the Polar Bear attack. Carlin won 20-of-25 faceoffs for Bowdoin, which also accounted for 15 ground balls.

Jack O’Connor had six saves for the Polar Bears before giving way to Caleb Green over the final 2:10.

Bowdoin will host Hamilton on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Whittier Field.

Women’s lacrosse

A furious comeback by Bowdoin came up just short in a 14-12 loss to second-ranked Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday morning at Englewood, Florida.

The Polar Bears (1-2) are ranked 14th in the latest Division III poll. The Diplomats improved to 4-1.

Franklin & Marshall got off to a scalding hot start, scoring the first six goals to put the Polar Bears in an early hole. The Diplomats led by as may as seven goals in the opening half, but two late scores by Eliza Denious trimmed the lead to 10-4 at halftime.

After a Diplomat goal right out of the break extended the lead back to seven, 11-4, Bowdoin caught fire, rolling off a 7-1 run. Amanda Anderson got it going for the Polar Bears in the surge, which saw seven difference goal scorers.

When Katie Miller scored with 8:06 remaining, it drew Bowdoin within a single goal, 12-11. Maddie Hughes stemmed the tide for F&M, pushing the lead back to two goals, 13-11, with 6:02 left, but Miller replied again at 2:05, cutting it to a single goal game.

Bowdoin won the ensuing draw control, but a turnover squelched all hopes of a comeback as Maisie O’Shea put home the game-clinching score for the Diplomats with 1:02 to go.

F&M held a 32-29 edge in shots, but Bowdoin owned a 19-14 advantage in the second half thanks to eight draw control victories in the frame.

Denious and Miller had three goals apiece for Bowdoin. Morgan Pinado and Miller had four draws apiece, while Denious added three caused turnovers, three ground balls and two draws. Fiona Bundy had a goal and four assists for the Polar Bears.

O’Shea and Hughes had three goals each for the Diplomats, who received eight saves from Julia McKay. Bowdoin’s Erin Morrissey made seven saves

Bowdoin will return north to face Hamilton in Clinton, New York, on Saturday at noon.

Men’s tennis

The Polar Bears secured their second win in California on Tuesday evening as they dispatched Skidmore, 9-0.

Bowdoin (2-0) is ranked third in the nation, while Skidmore is ranked 26th.

Bowdoin got started with a win at No. 3 doubles from Justin Patel/Oscar Yang, 8-3, and then squeaked out a pair of big wins at No. 1 and 2, getting 8-7 victories from Grant Urken/Jerry Jiang and Larry Zhao/Justin Wang to take a commanding 3-0 advantage.

The Polar Bears put away the Thoroughbreds in singles play, earning five straight-set wins, including a 6-1, 6-2 victory from Urken and 6-1, 6-0 victory from Jiang at the top two spots. Yang, Patel and Alan Delman also collected straight-set wins, while Wang completed the sweep with a 6-1, 5-7, 12-10 win at No. 4.

The Polar Bears will have a pair of off days before returning to action on Friday against Southwestern (Texas) at the Stag-Hen Invitational hosted by Claremont Mudd Scripps.
