The Bowdoin men’s lacrosse team picked up a 12-10 NESCAC victory over visiting Hamilton on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears improve to 4-1 (2-1 NESCAC), while the Continentals drop to 2-2 (1-2 NESCAC).

Trailing 7-5, Bowdoin stormed back with four goals in the third quarter while keeping Hamilton off the board. Sam Langan and Fowler scored just 23 seconds apart to open the frame.

Bowdoin rattled off two more quick goals in the final quarter for an 11-7 lead before Hamilton’s McCollum found the back of the net at 9:19. The Continentals scored three of the game’s last four goals, but the Polar Bears held on for the win.

Chris Conley led both teams with four goals. Larsen and McCollum each pitched in a pair.

Fowler paced the Polar Bears with three goals. Murtagh, Langan, and Jake Crossman all tallied two.

Max Scheidl made 13 stops in net for the Continentals., while Jack O’Connor made 17 saves for Bowdoin.

Sam Carlin went 12-26 in faceoffs, while Quinlan Crowley was 14-26.

The Polar Bears play St. Lawrence in Florida on Tuesday at 1 p.m.

Women’s lacrosse

The Hamilton College women’s lacrosse team used a late five-goal run to come-from-behind in a 14-13 win over Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon.

The Continentals pick up their first win of the season and improve to 1-2 (1-2 NESCAC) while the Polar Bears fall to 1-3 (1-2 NESCAC).

Bowdoin built an early 5-2 lead thanks to a pair of early goals from Katie Miller and led by as many as four goals, 8-4, with 2:07 remaining in the first half.

The Continentals scored twice in the final 86 seconds of the period, including a goal with just four seconds left before halftime, to cut the lead to 8-6 at the break.

Hamilton began its game-winning run with an unassisted goal from Kara Pooley and then got goals from Honor Gabriel and Courtney Pierre to tie the game at 12 apiece with 7:39 left.

The loss overshadowed a six-goal effort by Bowdoin’s Miller. Finnerty had two goals, an assist, seven draw controls and two caused turnovers in the defeat. Fiona Bundy had two goals and two assists for Bowdoin while Morgan Pinado had eight draw controls.

Hannah Burrall had 11 saves for the Continentals while Erin Morrissey stopped 13 shots for Bowdoin.

The Polar Bears owned a 19-10 edge in draw controls, but turned the ball over 26 times in the loss.

Bowdoin returns to action Wednesday at the University of New England at 4 p.m.

Men’s tennis

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Bowdoin College men’s tennis team finished second at this weekend’s prestigious Stag-Hen Invitational hosted by Claremont Mudd Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.

The second-ranked Polar Bears defeated 38th-ranked Southwestern (Tex.) 8-1 and 11th-ranked Pomona-Pitzer 7-2 before dropping their first match of the season to sixth-ranked CMS, 7-2.

Bowdoin stands at 4-1 overall this season.

The Polar Bears took a 2-1 lead in doubles play, but swept the singles matches, including five straight-set wins to defeat Southwestern.

Jerry Jiang, Oscar Yang, Justin Patel, Luke Carstens and Larry Zhao accounted for the straight-set wins while Grant Urken earned a three-set triumph.

Against Pomona-Pitzer, Bowdoin swept doubles play to take a commanding 3-0 lead on their way to the win.

Bowdoin clinched the victory with three-set comeback wins from Urken (3-6, 6-2, 6-1) and Jiang (4-6, 6-2, 6-1).

Things were looking good for Bowdoin against Claremont as the Polar Bears held a 2-1 lead in doubles play.

The Stags stormed back in singles play, however, winning every match, including five straight-set decisions to clinch the victory and the title.

The Polar Bears will have a few days off before returning to action on March 19 against Babson at the Claremont Club.

Baseball

WHITTIER, Calif. – The Bowdoin baseball team is still in search of its first win following a 10-3 setback to Whittier on Friday afternoon.

The Polar Bears are 0-5 on the year, while the Poets improve to 4-7.

The Poets scored in the first, third, and sixth innings before Bowdoin established its offense.

Trailing 5-0 in the seventh, the Polar Bears pushed a pair of runs across the plate. Jack Wilhoite led off with a bunt single and Austin Zakow pushed him to third with a double to right center.

Owen Gideon-Murphy put the ball in play to third, allowing Wilhoite to score.

With the bases loaded, Eric Mah walked and pushed Zakow home.

Whittier responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning.

In the ninth, Nick Lam pinch hit and singled up the middle to drive in Nick Merrill.

Zakow and Merrill each tagged a double. Gavin Cann recorded a triple in the fifth.

Andrew Cohen pitched 3.2 innings, allowing five hits and four runs. Cohen added four strikeouts and a pair of walks. Jeff Price pitched 2.1 innings with three hits and three runs. Aidan Schraeder came in and pitched two outs of the seventh inning.

Patrick Lynott pitched the final 1.1 innings with one walk, one hit, and one strikeout.

Softball

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Bowdoin softball team suffered its first loss of the season in a walkoff 3-2 setback to Hope, but bounced back with a 5-2 win over Gordon on Friday evening.

The Polar Bears are 5-1 and the Flying Dutch open the year at 2-0. The Gordon Lions are 6-6.

The Polar Bears went ahead 1-0 in the top of the second off a Samantha Valdivia double to center.

Maddie Rouhana added a solo shot to center in the fourth to double the Polar Bears run tally.

The Flying Dutch cut the deficit in half with a double in the bottom half of the inning.

Arinn King plated the game-tying run in the seventh, singling up the middle. King eventually became the winning run as Shay Pinhey tagged a walkoff single to center, driving in King.

Kate Hoadley pitched the complete game for the Polar Bears, allowing seven hits with a pair of walks and three K’s.

Kasey Cunningham and Karlye Pallotta each had a stolen base.

Bowdoin came back from an early deficit to take a 2-1 lead in the sixth. Valdivia tripled to right and drove in Natasha Fingar to put the Polar Bears on the board.

Ruby Siltanen singled through the left side and drove in Valdivia for the lead.

With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Fingar doubled to right and plated all three runners to give the Polar Bears breathing room heading into the Lions final at bats.

Gordon got one run back as Laura Bieren singled up the middle.

Allison Rutz started the game in the circle and pitched four innings, allowing four hits with three strikeouts. Siltanen pitched 1.2 innings and Samantha Roy rounded out the day.

Cunningham and Valdivia each tagged a double, while Fingar had two. Pallotta and Valdivia each hit a triple.
