BRUNSWICK — Nine members of the Bowdoin swimming & diving team will compete this week at the NCAA Division III Championship in Greensboro, N.C.

Seniors Sterling Dixon, Mitch Ryan, and Karl Sarier will all make their fourth consecutive NCAA appearances. Junior Marshall Lowery continues her perfect streak with her third NCAA invitation and sophomore Mary Lauritaand Amanda Banasiak will both head to the meet for the second time. Juniors Julian Abaldo and Drew MacDonald along with first-year Ted Me bust will be making their first trips to nationals.

On the women’s side, Sterling Dixon has qualified in the 200 IM (6th seed), 200 free (7th seed), and 200 fly (3rd seed). Marshall Lowery qualified in the 200 backstroke (12th). She will also race the 200 IM (46th seed) and the 100 backstroke (21st). Mary Laurita qualified with a sixth seeded 100 fly. She will also race the 50 free (47th) and 100 free (51st). Dixon, Lowery, Laurita, and junior Amanda Banasiak qualified a 400 freestyle relay (18th). The women will also race in the 200 free, the 400 free and 200 medley relays.

For the Polar Bear men, Karl Sarier qualified for the meet with a 12th seeded 100 freestyle. He’ll also race the 200 IM (30th) and 200 free (24th). Mitch Ryan returns to Nationals after finishing second on one-meter at this weekend’s NCAA Regional diving competition. He’ll compete on both the one and three meter boards. Sarier, first year Ted Mebust and juniors Julian Abaldo and Drew Macdonald qualified the 400 freestyle relay in 14th. Mebust will also race the 50 free (24th) and 100 backstroke (27th). The quartet will also race in three relays: 200 free, 400 free and 200 medley.

Prelims begin at 10 a.m. each day with finals scheduled for 6 p.m. Women precede men in all events.

The Polar Bears just completed a week of training down south sailing on Biscayne Bay out of the Ransom Everglades School.  We had a tremendous week of sailing and we able to take advantage of the warm weather and great breeze with long days on the water.  The Polar Bears competed at the Rudkin Team Race at Eckerd College to start off the trip.  Nearly two rounds were completed in light to moderate sailing conditions.  The Polar Bears finished the regatta with an 11-3 record, finishing first overall.  Competing for the Polar Bears was Louisa Lindgren, Emily Gonzalez, Julia Adams, Marie Bergsund, Christian Filter, Matt Safford, Alden Grimes, and Matt Kaplan.

This past weekend, the Polar Bears returned to north to compete at the Southern New England Team Race hosted by Connecticut College.  Conditions were surprisingly warm.  Two round robins were completed.  The team showed great discipline and strong team work. We have plenty of work to do before our team race championship in three weekends but the team is making progress.  The team finished with a 14-4 record, finishing second overall.  Competing for Bowdoin was Alden Grimes, Elijah Berger, Matt Kaplan, Matt Safford, Louisa Lindgren, Christian Filter, Marie Bergsund, Julia Adams, and Emily Gonzalez.

This upcoming weekend the Polar Bears will compete in the Vietor Trophy at CGA, the Friis Trophy at Roger Williams, and the Eagle Team Race at Boston College.

Baseball

REDLANDS, Calif. – The Bowdoin baseball team continued its spring break California swing with a 17-1 loss at Redlands on Sunday.

The Polar Bears are still in search of their first win and sit at 0-7. The Bulldogs are 9-11-1.

The Bulldogs plated two runs in the third and fourth, adding a single run in the fifth before Bowdoin plated its first.

Jack Wilhoite drove in Bowdoin’s lone run in the top of the sixth. Austin Zakow earned a leadoff walk and Brendan O’Neil pushed him to third with a single to right. Wilhoite singled through the left side for the RBI.

Redlands answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and three in the seventh.

O’Neil went 2-for-4 at the plate. Wilhoite, Colby Joncas, and Owen Gideon-Murphy all recorded a hit.

Aidan Schraeder, Gavin Cann, Seamus Keenan, Jeff Price, Ben Osterholtz, and Wilhoite all pitched in relief. Keenan, Price, and Wilhoite all fanned a pair.

Bowdoin plays a doubleheader at La Verne this afternoon.

Softball

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Bowdoin softball team suffered its first doubleheader setback of the season in a 7-5 loss to Linfield and 6-5 loss to Clarkson on Sunday afternoon.

The Polar Bears are 5-3 on the year. The Clarkson Knights are 7-3 and the Wildcats are 7-5.

Linfield jumped out to a three run lead in the top of the first, but Bowdoin’s Samantha Valdivia tagged an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning to put the Polar Bears on the board.

The Wildcats went up 7-1 with two runs in both the third and fourth innings before the Polar Bears found their offensive footing.

Karyle Pallotta chopped a bases loaded shot to second and drove in Caroline Sablone to double Bowdoin’s run tally.

Caroline Rice scored in the fifth on a passed ball to make the score 7-3.

The Polar Bears continued their comeback bid in the sixth with an RBI double off the bat of Pallotta.

Cunningham, Valdivia, Rice, and Allison Rutz all went 2-for-4 at the plate.

In game two, Bowdoin scored four runs in the first inning to take a quick 4-0 lead over the Knights.

Rice tagged a two run triple to right center to put the Polar Bears up. Valdivia followed up by doubling to center and driving in Rice. Natasha Fingar plated Valdivia to round out the inning.

Clarkson whittled away at the deficit with a two run third and another RBI single in the fourth.

The Knights completed the comeback with three runs in the sixth, including a pair off a double to left center.

Kate Hoadley pitched the final 2.2 innings with three strikeouts and four hits.

Valdivia and Rouhana each had a double, while Rice tagged a triple.
