BIDDEFORD — Fourteen different players scored to lead the Bowdoin College women’s lacrosse team to a lopsided 24-2 victory over the University of New England on Wednesday afternoon. 

The 18th-ranked Polar Bears stand at 2-3 after the victory. The Nor’easters fall to 3-4 with the loss. 

Bowdoin scored the first dozen goals of the game, putting the contest into running time just 14 minutes into the match.

Katie Miller had three goals in the game-opening run while Kate Kelly and Elizabeth Growney had two apiece.

Bowdoin led 15-1 at the break and coasted to a 9-1 advantage in the second half. 

Miller ended with a team-high three goals and was joined by first-year Hadley Carlton, who also rallied a hat trick.

Sophomore Eliza Denious had four assists in the win

Erin Morrissey made one stop for Bowdoin in the first half while AaliyahBiondo made two second-half saves.

Bowdoin owned a 36-5 shot advantage in the win. 

The Polar Bears return to action on Saturday at noon when they host Middlebury College.

Baseball earns tie

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Bowdoin baseball team earned a 7-7 eight inning tie at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday afternoon.

The result was the Polar Bears best of the season, as they sit at 0-9-1. The Stags are 7-5-1 and had been riding a five game win streak.

CMS went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first off an RBI double to center. The Stags added a second run in the fourth.

Bowdoin exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning to take the lead. Gavin Cann got the offense going with an RBI single to left and Eric Mah followed up with a single to right. James McCarthy tagged an RBI single to left. With the bases loaded, Austin Zakow doubled to right and drove in two more runs. McCarthy later came around to score on a wild pitch. Colby Joncas rounded out the inning with a sacrifice fly to right, plating Zakow.

The Stags chipped away at the lead with two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh.

Former Mt. Ararat standout Nick Merrill was the only Polar Bear to record multiple hits, going 2-for-4.

On the mound, Peter O’Connell pitched two innings and recorded two strikeouts. Beckett Slayton pitched 3-2/3 innings with six hits allowed and three runs, while Jeff Price pitched one inning and allowed four hits and three runs. Ryan Winn closed out the game.

Softball wins pair

CLERMONT, Fla — The Bowdoin softball team earned a walkoff 8-7 win over Endicott and sprinted past Grinnell 14-6 for a pair of Monday wins.

The Polar Bears are 7-3 on the year. The Gulls are 3-1 and the Pioneers are 0-6.

The Gulls plated three runs in the first inning to take an early lead in game one. Jamie Hopgood added a solo homerun in the third to extend the lead to 4-0.

Natasha Fingar’s bases loaded walk in the fourth brought in Kasey Cunningham.

Maddie Rouhana gave Bowdoin the lead with a grand slam to left field.

A three run fifth inning regained the lead of Endicott of a pair of doubles.

Rouhana drove in her fifth run of the game, singling through the right side, in the bottom of the fifth to tie things up.

With runners on first and third, a one-out wild pitch allowed Samantha Valdivia to come home for a the walkoff run.

Kate Hoadley started the game and pitched four innings. Ruby Siltanen pitched 2.2 innings before Samantha Roy came in to close out the final 1.1 with three strikeouts.

Allison Rutz tagged a double and Rouhana had the grand slam and five RBI.

Cunningham had a pair of stolen bases.

Game two — Bowdoin exploded for six runs in the first inning against Grinnell. Caroline Rice got the Polar Bears started with an RBI single. A fielding error allowed another run and Bowdoin was quickly up 2-0.

Karlye Pallotta tagged an RBI double to left and Rutz launched a three run shot over the left field fence.

The Pioneers got a couple runs back in the bottom half of the inning, but Bowdoin responded with a Rouhana RBI single in the second.

Grinnell made it a 10-6 game in the second. Maddie Matsubara hit a two run single and Mya Davis tagged a two run double.

The game was controlled by the Polar Bears from that point as the team put three runs across the plate in the third.

Former Mt. Ararat star Katelyn Cox, Caroline Sablone, and Rice all drove in runs.

Rice hit a two run double in the fifth and Valdivia doubled to drive in Rice. Rouhana wrapped up the day with an RBI double to left center.

Rutz pitched all five innings and allowed seven hits with one strikeout.

Rice totaled four RBI, followed by Rutz with three and Rouhana with two.

Women’s tennis posts 9-0 win

REDLANDS, Calif. – The Bowdoin women’s tennis team won a pair of 9-0 matches over Trinity and Redlands on Tuesday afternoon.

The Polar Bears are 6-1, while the Bantams are 1-2 and the Bulldogs are 4-6.

Julia Marks and Sarah Shadowens went 8-5 at one doubles, followed by Izzy Essi/Tasha Christ (8-3) at two and Fleming Landau/Sasa Jovanovic (8-1) at three.

The Polar Bears cruised through singles with similar results.

Marks went 6-2, 6-0 at one and Christ picked up a pair of 6-2 sets in the two spot.

Essi also went 6-2, 6-0 at three and Jovanovic was a perfect 6-0, 6-0 at four.

Landau continued her strong play (6-1, 6-0) in the fifth spot and Shadowens rounded out the day at six (7-5, 6-0).

The Polar Bears cruised to another doubles sweep in the second match. Devon Wolfe joined Marks at one (8-1) and Esssi/Christ again teamed up at two (8-4).

Landau and Jovanovic picked up an 8-3 win at three.

Marks (6-2, 6-3) and Christ (6-2, 6-1) played at one and two respectively.

Wolfe stepped back in and earned a win at three (6-1, 6-5).

Essi won 6-2, 6-4 in the fourth spot and Jovanovic went 6-1, 6-4 at five.

Landau rounded out the six with a 6-1, 6-1 showing.

Bowdoin’s match with Claremont Mudd Scripps on Wednesday was cancelled.
