The third annual John Andrews Memorial 5K Run/Walk is scheduled for Saturday, May 18.
The event is held in honor of the late John Andrews, Eastern Trail founder, mentor and friend to the community.
According to an Eastern Trail Alliance statement, “His vision to create the Eastern Trail started in the early 1990s. He was persistent, but patient, and made tremendous progress in a relatively short amount of time.
“After starting this amazing effort, John lived on the trail, used the trail, and guided countless others to understand and appreciate this great resource.”
Proceeds from the event benefit the Eastern Trail Alliance, an organization dedicated to building a 65-mile transportation and recreation greenway from Kittery to South Portland, and will go directly to support the Close the Gap Campaign.
“With 22 miles currently off road, the goal is to raise awareness and funds to continue John’s vision of filling in the gaps and adding more miles to the off road trail sections,” said the alliance in a written statement.
The construction of this trail segment, which includes two bridges will close this gap between South Portland and Scarborough and provide 16 continuous off-road miles reaching from South Portland’s Bug Light to downtown Saco.

Registration fees are $20 prior to the event and $25 on the day of the event.
For those older than 21, one beer is included with registration fee.
Free T-shirts will be provided to those who register before April 30.
Additional donations toward the Close the Gap campaign in honor of John Andrews are appreciated.
Race-day packet pick-up, check-in and on-site registration will be at O’Reilly’s Cure, 264 Route 1, Scarborough.
On-site registration is 7 to 8:15 a.m. on Saturday, May 18.
Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. Organizes encourage participants to arrive for sign-in an hour before the race starts. Carpooling is suggested to alleviate parking congestion.
The event is tobacco-free, rain or shine. Registration fees cannot be refunded or transferred to a future event.
No strollers, pets or dogs are permitted for safety reasons.
All proceeds will go to the Eastern Trail Alliance, a 501c3 nonprofit, to assist in Closing the Gap (1.6 miles stretch between Scarborough and South Portland)
The route is out and back on the scenic, Scarborough Marsh off road section of the Eastern Trail in Scarborough. There will be a water stop mid-way and at the end. An award ceremony will be held at O’Reilly’s Cure.
