Historical Society revisits
sho0tout that killed chief
The death of Westbrook Police Chief Pierre Harnois, who was gunned down 60 years ago in May, will be the topic of the Westbrook Historical Society program when the group meets at 1:30 p.m. May 1, at the Westbrook Community Center, 426 Bridge St.
Harnois, who died at 32, was fatally shot in a wild shootout at a house on Route 11 in Limerick. Westbrook Mayor Mike Sanphy said the program will include a black and white video recorded at the chaotic scene, which involved a standoff with a gunman.
He died May 14, 1959. He was shot while attempting to employ tear gas.
A former FBI agent, Harnois was appointed Westbrook police chief in April 1958.
Post 62 election
The Stephen W. Manchester Post 62 of the American Legion will meet at 6 p.m. May 1 at its headquarters, 17 Dunn St., for a business meeting to nominate and elect officers.
The newly elected officers will be installed at the June 5 post meeting.
