WESTBROOK — Cinemark Holdings Inc. has reached an agreement with Waterstone Properties Group to build a 12-screen theater at Rock Row.
The theater, which would be part of the mixed-use development proposed for the old Pike quarry site on the Portland line, still needs approval from the Westbrook Planning Board. It is scheduled to open in the spring of 2021.
“We are excited to be a part of Rock Row, a very unique and dynamic real estate project, and to open our first Maine theater location,” Mark Zoradi, Cinemark CEO, said in a release announcing the news. “Our brand new Cinemark theater will be the entertainment anchor to this impressive mixed-use lifestyle center.”
Each of the theater’s auditoriums will have reserved seating with electric-powered, oversized recliners with footrests, cup holders and heat-controlled seats.
Rock Row’s planned first phase at the corner of Main Street and Larrabee Road will feature a Market Basket, Starbucks, The Paper Store and other retailers. The Maine Savings Pavilion, an 8,200 capacity concert venue, is set to open May 26.
“From the beginning, a defining principle for Rock Row has been to create an entertainment-driven visitor experience,” Waterstone Properties Group principal Josh Levy said. “We knew the cornerstone of that experience would be driven by a movie theater, and we’re thrilled to be partnering with Cinemark, a world-class operator that shares our commitment to that vision.”
Levy told the American Journal earlier this year he expects to be before the Planning Board again soon to get permitting for Rock Row’s next phase, including a 25,000-square-foot food and beer hall, 110-room hotel, the movie theater, 150 residential units and additional restaurants and retail overlooking a pedestrian plaza.
The Rock Row theater would be Cinemark’s first in the state. The company operates 547 theaters with 6,051 screens in 41 U.S. states, Brazil, Argentina and 13 other Latin American countries.
Cinemark, an international theater company, has plans to build its first theater in Maine as part of the Rock Row development on Main Street. The theater, which still needs planning board approval, is scheduled to open in spring 2021.
