CAPE ELIZABETH — Several events are planned in Cape Elizabeth, South Portland and Scarborough in observance of Memorial Day.

The May 27 holiday honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Cape Elizabeth

A parade in Cape Elizabeth will begin at 9 a.m. Monday at the intersection of Fowler Road and Old Ocean House Road.

It continues north on Route 77, turns left onto Scott Dyer Road, and will end at the War Veteran’s Memorial between the Pond Cove Elementary and Middle schools, where a wreath-laying ceremony will be held.

After the ceremony, the public is invited to attend an open house at the town center fire station.

South Portland

On Saturday, May 25, the South Portland War Veterans Memorial Association, consisting of Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Post 832 and American Legion Post 35, will gather at American Legion Post 35 on Broadway at 9 a.m. to lay flags at five cemeteries. Volunteers are welcome.

On Memorial Day, a parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Southern Maine Community College and travel down Broadway, ending at the Veterans Monument at Mill Creek Park, where there will be a short service around noon.

The eastern end of Broadway will be closed to traffic during the events.

An annual outdoor Mass for deceased veterans will be held at 9 a.m. in the veterans’ section of the New Calvary Cemetery, 1461 Broadway. Seating may be limited, so bring a lawn chair if possible.

In the event of rain, the Mass will be held at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Road.

Scarborough

The Libby Mitchell American Legion Post 76 will host a parade at 10 a.m. Monday at Scarborough High School.

It will follow Route 114 to Route 1, ending at the Legion Post on Manson Libby Road. There will be a brief stop at 10:15 during the parade for ceremonies at the Maine Veterans Home and the Veterans Monument.
