The No. 2 paper machine in the S.D. Warren mill in Westbrook is in pieces, most of it to be delivered to a paper mill in Canada. The machine produced high-quality Warren papers in 100-inch width since it was new in 1899. It was shut down Sept. 1, 1994, and layoffs were made. The plant is left with four paper machines.

Westbrook Community Hospital this week opened its new wing. The $1.3 million project includes new emergency room facilities and a modern diagnostic lab.

The Gorham School Committee will formally vote to eliminate 12 faculty positions when it meets tonight. Superintendent Timothy McCormack said he cut jobs to comply with the Town Council edit for a zero increase in property taxes. Most of the committee members attacked the council edict, claiming that the cuts would hurt education.

Beverly Silke, Gorham, joined her brother and sisters April 2 in giving a surprise 75th birthday party for their mother, Florence Close of Westbrook. The large family party was held at the Westbrook home of Richard and Barbara Bernier.

It’s been eight years since the Westbrook Police Department had a deputy chief, but the City Council has taken steps to let Chief Steven Roberts name a deputy at $41,600 a year. Roberts says he expects the deputy to be someone from within the department but hasn’t gone to the Public Safety Commission yet to establish the process for hiring.

Dennis Duquette, Gorham Middle School principal, has withdrawn as a candidate for principal at Cape Elizabeth Middle School. He was one of two finalists for the job. Superintendent Ted Sharp told the School Committee and parents the news, which eased fears that Gorham would lose the well-liked Duquette. He was named Gorham principal when the new middle school opened in 2003.

Ben Morgan, 12, of Westbrook, is the youngest student to receive a Westbrook High School varsity letter. Morgan, a sixth grader at Wescott Junior High School, played with the high school chess team at a state tournament last month in Orono.

Two supporters of Chicky’s Fine Diner, 3 Bridge St., Westbrook, congratulated the restaurant and bar on its first anniversary. Harbor Fish Market in Portland and Martini Lane in Westbrook both placed ads to commemorate the anniversary.

The request for proposals to develop Saccarappa Park in Westbrook will be sent out May 1, with a deadline of July 1. The city expects to designate the winning proposal Aug. 1. The city is stipulating that only 60% of the 1.34-acre parcel can be developed, with the rest reserved as public open space along the river. Views of the river from Main Street must also be maintained.

Nine dancers from Gorham will perform in the Maine State ballet production of “Cinderella,” April 30 and May 1 at Merrill Auditorium. They are Nicola Backhaus, Kristen Campbell, Charlotte Feinberg, Rebecca Harrington, Delaney Patten-Harris, Marissa Patten-Harris, Cynthia Reynolds, Nicholas Reynolds and Molly Stewart.
