Leonard Santamore

OLD ORCHARD BEACH – Leonard Santamore of Old Orchard Beach passed away at home on Jan. 31, 2021, after a period of declining health. He was born in Burlington, Vt. on Nov. 21, 1936 to Captolia and Maurice Santamore. He grew up in Cumberland Center, Maine.

Len served in the US Army and subsequently worked for Fox Lumber, Saco Tanning Corp., eventually retiring from Hannaford Corp. where he was the night security guard at the corporate office. Leonard married his first wife Winnie in 1955. They were blessed with four children and much happiness until her untimely death in 1971.

He remarried and spent 46 years with his devoted wife Anita who loved him and misses him deeply. Their love was unconditional and Anita cared for Len throughout many years of health challenges, allowing him to remain in their home where he was most comfortable. Although Len’s life was a rollercoaster of change, loss, struggles and joy, he always managed to be kind and find satisfaction in the simple things in life.

Len was known for his love of family, reading the daily Portland Press Herald, cheering for his beloved Red Sox and keeping track of baseball statistics. He was a lifelong Red Sox, Patriots and NY Giants fan. He enjoyed reading Louis L’amour novels, amassing the entire collection. He looked forward to visits from family and loved nothing more than a cup of coffee and a donut. He remembered with fondness many visits with his nephews who always loved and respected him. Len was highly organized and never missed a chance to call and wish his loved ones a happy birthday. His memory was quite remarkable for most of his life.

Leonard is predeceased by his parents; his first wife Winnifred, brother Louis; son Leonard Jr.; and his grandson Sean.

He is survived by his loving wife Anita Santamore; sons Michael, and Clifford and his wife Kathleen, daughters Loriann Rouleau and her husband David, and Debra Phiri; grandchildren Jamie Santamore, Christopher, Justin and Jeffrey Rouleau, Jill Blake, and Paul Santamore; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the staff and caregivers of Northern Light Hospice and the VA for their compassionate care and support during Len’s illness.

According to Leonard’s wishes, there are no services. A graveside committal at Evergreen Cemetery will take place in the summer when it is safe to gather. On-line condolences can be given to the family at http://www.cotefuneralhome.com.
