I am incredibly privileged to work with elementary school children at Kate Furbish Elementary School. Just prior to February break, Brunswick School Department employees received a $10 gift certificate from Wild Oats Bakery that said, “Thank you for being our Community Heroes. Love, the Wild Oats Team.” There are 450 BSD employees.

I’ve known the owners, Becky and David Shepherd, for years; our children went through the Brunswick school system together. Becky has served on the Brunswick School Board and has continued to be a strong advocate for our schools. I’m a volunteer for nonprofits, and whenever I have asked Becky for assistance, she has always been glad to contribute, both financially and with her time.

Many years ago I bid on a baking lesson at a Jordan Acres auction, and my son and I spent over two hours baking cookies in the magical Wild Oats basement with Becky. We’ll never forget it. On a field trip a couple years ago, we rounded a corner and there Becky was, at a baking station. She gladly demonstrated what she was making and answered students’ questions.

I told my sister about the certificates. She sent me a screenshot. Wild Oats also donated a thousand $10 gift certificates to be raffled for MidCoast-Parkview Health employees. Their generosity and care for front-line workers and for our community are truly amazing. Thank you, Becky, David and the Wild Oats Team. You are all appreciated, too.

I’ve already spent my gift certificate on my first box of hot cross buns. Only available during Lent.
