Emily Jane Armstrong

PORTLAND – After a brief but arduous battle with cancer, Emily Jane Armstrong left this world early in the morning of March 15, 2021, surrounded by her immediate family.

Born Emily Jane Taylor in Bridgton, on March 10, 1933, the daughter of Robert Clement Taylor and Mildred Irene (Adams) Taylor; she graduated from Westbrook High School in 1951 and from Maine Medical Center School of Nursing in 1953. She married the love of her life, Millard Lee Armstrong on August 7, 1953.

Emily worked as a nurse in private duty and also at several facilities in the Portland area including National Medical Care, Mercy Hospital and 75 State Street, which is where she and Lee spent their final years.

Longtime residents of Highland Avenue in South Portland, they followed their good friends, George and Norma Tripp, to settle in Hazel Green, Alabama in 2005, where they lived for about 11 years. Whether in Maine or Alabama, Emily and Lee spent their lives making friends in their church, in their neighborhood and in their community.

Emily enjoyed attending concerts, particularly in the southern gospel and country music genre. An avid knitter, Emily crocheted and knitted many magnificent items for friends and family. Emily was known for her deep caring for others and the unconditional love she had for all.

She was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Bobby Taylor; her husband, Lee; and by her stepfather, Leo LeClerc.

Emily is survived by her brother, Tom LeClerc, sister-in-law, Saundra Werth; son, Mark Armstrong and his wife, Diane; grand-daughter, Angela Armstrong and her partner, Laura Nichols, grand-daughter, Melanie Ayer and her husband, Charles; great-grandson, Anthony Ayer; goddaughter, Ashley Tapley; and by many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the amazing staff at 75 State Street for their kindness and their help; special friends of the family Pastor Dwayne and Melodie Hopkins; and Northern Light Hospice.

A graveside service at Highland Memorial Gardens in South Portland will be held on May 15, at 11 a.m.

Arrangements entrusted to Hobbs Funeral Home, South Portland.
