The city of Portland is warning motorists that traffic around the intersection of Preble Street and Baxter Boulevard could be delayed next week because of construction work related to the Back Cove sewer separation project.

The city said it plans to erect barricades and detour traffic near the intersection Tuesday.

Work crews will connect existing utilities at the intersection of Marginal Way and Franklin Street to the new storage tanks under the Preble Street playing fields, part of the Back Cove South Storage Facility Project, said city spokeswoman Jessica Grondin.

The sewer separation project is designed to prevent untreated sewage and stormwater from flowing into Back Cove during severe rainstorms when the city’s sewage treatment plant can become overwhelmed by the extra volume.

The project schedule and related graphics can be found on the Public Works website.
