Joseph De La Cruz

According to an April 6 news release from Freedom Realty, “Joseph A. De La Cruz is a Portland Realtor. His business foundation is firmly established on the philosophy of always providing competence and white-glove service to the
public equally and fairly. De La Cruz’s approach to real estate is unconventional due to the fact that he doesn’t pursue the money, but rather pursues the relationship.

“His enthusiasm for helping others and his positive attitude helps him immediately connect with everyone and provide everyone with the best experience possible. You can either go with the conventional agent or the unconventional one, the great thing about it is that the choice is always yours.”

Marc Cardullo a 15-year real estate broker from Saco, offers brokerage firm services from York to Bangor and welcomes his third agent to the team. Congregation Bet Ha’am, a Reform Jewish community, announced final plans for the organization’s fourth annual literary-themed fundraiser. This year’s event, A Dramatic Affair, is scheduled for May 1 and features Zoom readings of three brand-new theater pieces by three of Maine’s best-known dramatists: Brent Askari, Bess Welden and Monica Wood.

The pieces will be brought to life by actors and directors from Mad Horse Theater Company in an evening hosted by master of ceremonies David Bass-Clark and features three question-and-answer sessions with the authors and artists.

Tickets to the event are being offered on a sliding scale, and all proceeds benefit Congregation Bet Ha’am, whose mission is to provide vision, voice, and opportunity for connecting to, practicing, and sustaining Judaism. For more information, visit  www.bethaam.org/events/gala/.

“Quang’s story of moving to Maine with limited English skills and excelling at Southern Maine Community College and in his business pursuits after SMCC is an inspiration to all of us,” said SMCC President Joe Cassidy in a news release. “His resilience and positive attitude will resonate with our graduates and open their eyes to the opportunities around them.”

Southern Maine Community College will hold its commencement remotely at 11 a.m. Sunday, May 16. Due to the pandemic, the college is unable to hold an in-person graduation ceremony. People can watch the pre-recorded event by going to SMCC’s website.

When Nguyen departed Vietnam at the age of 18 in 2007, he bought the wrong plane ticket and landed in Portland, Oregon, rather than Portland, Maine. From that inauspicious arrival in the United States, he shined at SMCC, graduating with high honors. He has enjoyed continuing success as a business entrepreneur. Nguyen has also given motivational talks at local TEDx events, including one at SMCC in 2016, delivering a message on the power of having a positive attitude and pursuing one’s passion. Nguyen said SMCC provided him the skills he needed to launch his career in business.

“Looking back,” he said, “Southern Maine Community College was the jumpstart to my American dream.”
