BIDDEFORD — It was a banner day for the community gardens adjacent to St. Andre’s senior housing property on Sullivan Street in Biddeford on May 13, when young people who attend after school programs at Apex and volunteers from United Way of York County each did their bit to make the gardens bigger and better.

The Apex group shoveled dirt and watered dry raised beds and were to help those from United Way help build six new raised garden boxes.

Jenna Ingram of United Way of York County said the gardening project is new to the agency and designed to help tamp down the numbers of people who are hungry, or food insecure, and help with social isolation. They decided to carry out this new project with people from Biddeford Community Gardens.
