Yay! Spring is here and, this year, we are celebrating our traditions once again. One of these fun and wonderful events is the Brunswick Farmers’ Market and, this year, it is back on the downtown Mall. The many vendors provide plants, garden-fresh vegetables, fruit, meat, lobsters, coffee, breads and many food trucks.

The signers of this letter are a group of Presbyterian women crafters who have knit, crocheted, sewn, baked and welcomed Maine visitors who have stopped by our table. We have done this for the past seven years. We sell our wares at a very low price, and all of the money we earn is donated to groups we help sponsor. Among these are Habitat for Humanity, the Boy Scouts, the Tedford Shelter, a young people’s theater, personal items for homeless youth and The Gathering Place.

We have recently been informed that a new policy for the Farmers’ Market will no longer allow so-called nonprofit vendors. Obviously, we are disheartened by this information and would like to continue our philanthropy. If any of the readers of this letter feel that we should be back on the Mall this year, please contact the Brunswick Town Council and voice your opinion to your individual councilor; John Eldridge, town manager (725-6659); Ryan Leighton, assistant town manager (725-6659; or to the Brunswick city clerk’s office (725-6658).

Thank you.
