One of the authors I absolutely loved reading as a child was Beverly Cleary. She had so many memorable books and I remember reading them fondly as a child: everything from “Dear Mr. Henshaw” to “Muggie Maggie” to the Ramona books. She will be sorely missed. Letter to the editor: Animals on conserved Maine land should be left in peace
Hearings on Land for Maine’s Future bills (L.D. 983 and L.D. 687) are taking place soon. Hidden in the text of both is a kill mandate. This consists of three words – trapping, hunting and fishing – which must be allowed on any land purchased through the program. Remove these three words and we have […]
Ron Chase: Three days in skiers’ paradise
For my money, Jackson Ski Touring Center in Jackson, New Hampshire, is the best commercial Nordic ski area in New England. Situated in the southern highlands of the Presidential Range, Jackson has 100 kilometers of trails and encompasses 60 square miles. There is something for every skier from beginner to expert. The trails vary from […]
Letter: Defending the vote, and baseball, in Georgia
I must admit, I get goosebumps every time I watch the end of the movie “Field of Dreams,” when thousands of headlights snake through the darkness of America’s heartland to “come” to a sanctuary of baseball. I got those same shivers when I turned on the news last night. To protest recent legislation that suppresses the […]
Maine Voices: Helping harassed Asian Americans doesn’t require confrontation
The 5 D’s of Upstander Intervention – Delegate, Distract, Delay, Document and Direct – can be practiced before you need them.
Mainewhile: High school sports should be open to all kids
I did not play sports in school. In fact, I hated them. I was the kid who always dropped the ball; I was the one picked last. So it is odd for me to do what I am about to do: advocate passionately for more inclusive school sports teams with opportunities for all to play. […]
Featured Property: Residential development in Biddeford with Saco River access
Over seven acres and 12 lots will be sold in their entirety.
Dick Polman: Biden willing to go big to fix nation’s ailing infrastructure
What welcome words these were, from a newly elected president: “We’re going to rebuild our infrastructure…our highways bridges, tunnels, airports…which will become second to none, and we will put millions of our people to work as we rebuild it.” That must be Uncle Joe, right? Think again, people. That was Trump, riffing in the wee […]
The Recycle Bin: What to do when your recycling is blowin’ in the wind
I’ve recently heard of some complaints about people’s recycling blowing around the neighborhood, and folks trying a variety of ways to deal with the problem — even deciding they would not recycle. Besides recycling being required by ordinance in Brunswick, there are better ways! The blue bins are easy. Some already have lids on them, […]
