Sam Rumelhart scored the go-ahead goal with 5:20 remaining in the second period, lifting Scarborough to a 2-1 win over South Portland/Freeport/Waynflete in a boys’ hockey game Thursday at Troubh Ice Arena.
Scarborough’s Jordan Sheppard opened the scoring with an unassisted goal 5:44 into the second period. Adam Cullen answered with a power-play goal just 49 seconds later, assisted by Tobey Lappin and Richard Gilboy,
Keegan Wood stopped 18 shots for Scarborough (5-3), which has won three straight. Jasper Curtis made 27 saves for the Red Riots (6-2), who are tied for second in this week’s Varsity Maine poll.
CAPE ELIZABETH 5, LEWISTON 2: Nick Laughlin scored twice as the Capers (5-2-1) defeated the Blue Devils (4-4) at Troubh Ice Arena.
Patrick Lee, Quinn Gordon and Philip Coupe each added a goal for
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
GORHAM 50, SCARBOROUGH 35: Caden Smith scored eight of his 17 points in the third quarter, sparking a 20-6 surge as the Rams (4-7) pulled away from the Red Storm (0-8) in Gorham.
The Rams led by just two at halftime, 20-18.
Ashton Leclerc added 13 points for Gorham.
Scarborough’s Nathaniel Glidden and Rowan MacDonald each had 11 points.
BONNY EAGLE 61, WESTBROOK 47: Eliot Bouchard scored 20 points, pacing the Scots (6-4) to a win over the Blue Blazes (2-7) in Westbrook.
Hayden Campbell added 16 points for Bonny Eagle, which led 30-16 at halftime.
Westbrook got 21 points from Tyler Hethcoat and 13 from Kolbyn Dunphe.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
BONNY EAGLE 47, WESTBROOK 39: Ember Hastings and Kaitlyn Bartash combined for 13 first-half points as the Scots (5-5) opened a 25-14 lead on the way to a win over the Blue Blazes (4-6) at Standish.
Hastings finished with 13 points, and Bartash and Kaitlyn Regan each scored nine.
Sarah Muka led Westbrook with 13 points. Natalie LaBrie added 11.
BRUNSWICK 70, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 31: Morgan Foster got 14 of her 21 points in the first quarter as the Dragons (7-0) ran out to a 32-5 advantage and easily handled the Patriots (7-3) at Brunswick.
Logan Brown knocked down five 3-pointers and finished with 17 points.
Isabella Morelli scored 11 points for Gray-New Gloucester.
BUCKFIELD 40, WISCASSET 17: Addison Stevens-Belanger scored 19 points to lead the Bucks (1-7) over the Wolverines (1-5) in Buckfield.
Kianna Finnegan chipped in with 11 points.
Qiana Hyman scored six points for Wiscasset.
GIRLS’ HOCKEY
MT. ARARAT 9, PORTLAND/DEERING 1: Sarah Moore recorded a hat trick in the first period, and Marley Lebel and Hannah Hawkes each scored twice for Mt. Ararat/Lisbon/Morse/Lincoln (11-3) in a win over the Bulldogs (1-11) at Troubh Ice Arena.
Salin Bachor and Mallory Stuart were the other goal scorers for the Eagles.
Jane Flynn scored for the Bulldogs early in the second period.
