Common courtesy between elected officials and their constituents includes directly addressing items of common interest. Unfortunately, Sen. Susan Collins has a distinct asymmetry to her addresses. She always touts monies brought to Maine through federal largesse, but she is silent on critical political concerns. We do not know what she thinks.

I read, regularly in this paper, letters and editorials exhorting the senator to take a stand. Even the editorial board of the Press Herald pleaded a case for her to speak up (Our View, Jan. 16).

She is mute until she votes in the Senate. Her votes are my only guide to her thinking on what concerns me most today. Her votes say she is an extreme conservative who supports willful obstruction at the expense of good governance.

Many people voted for President Biden and Sen. Collins. Obviously, they expected a moderate Sen. Collins. They have been greatly disappointed.

So, let’s turn the page. Pleading with Sen. Collins may make us feel good, but it simply has no effect. Let us now focus on replacing her. She is a lost cause.
