STANDISH — Cassandra Stapelfeld scored 19 points to lead four players in double figures as the St. Joseph’s women’s basketball team beat Rivier 77-43 on Tuesday night.

Angelica Hurley added 17 points and nine rebounds for St. Joseph’s (14-3, 8-1 GNAC). Hannah Talon chipped in 15 and Hailey Anderson had 12. Stapelfeld added seven rebounds and four assists.

Anna Stenger had 13 points for Rivier (6-11, 2-8).

BOWDOIN 87, UM-PRESQUE ISLE 59: Sydney Jones had 21 points and the Polar Bears (15-4) jumped out to a 20-11 first-quarter lead in a win over the Owls (8-9) in Brunswick.

Sela Kay chipped in with 18 points. Annie Boasberg added 10 points and seven rebounds.

Emily Wheaton scored 15 points for UMPI.

(4) LOUISVILLE 69, MIAMI 66: Kianna Smith had 21 points and Olivia Cochran scored the go-ahead basket as the Cardinals (19-2, 9-1 ACC) outlasted the Hurricanes (11-8, 4-5) in Coral Gables, Florida.

Cochran finished with 18 points, including her layup with 32 seconds remaining that gave Louisville a 67-66 advantage. Mykasa Robinson stole an inbounds pass and Smith’s two free throws with 11 seconds left gave Louisville its final margin.

(12) GEORGIA TECH 59, DUKE 46: Lorela Cubaj had 15 points and seven rebounds, Eylia Love added 14 points and eight rebounds, and the Yellow Jackets (18-4, 9-2 ACC) beat the Blue Devils (13-7, 4-6) in Durham, North Carolina.

Georgia Tech held Duke to 22.2% shooting in the first quarter to build a 20-5 lead behind 10 points from Love. The Yellow Jackets led by as many as 18 points in the first half, and their lead didn’t drop below eight points the rest of the way.

(19) OREGON 72, ARIZONA STATE 58: Nyara Sabally scored 22 points, Te-Hina Paopao had 19 points, six rebounds and six assists, and the Ducks (14-5, 7-1 Pac-12) beat the Sun Devils (9-8, 1-3) in Eugene, Oregon.

Oregon scored 17 straight points in the first quarter – all scored by Sabally and Paopao. Sabally scored 11 points in the quarter to help the Ducks build a 22-13 lead after shooting 66.7%. Arizona State’s defense took over in the second quarter, holding Oregon to 35.7% shooting and 11 points.

(20) NOTRE DAME 69, (3) NORTH CAROLINA STATE 66: Maya Dodson had 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, her fourth double-double of the season, as the Irish (17-4, 8-2 ACC) held on to beat the Wolfpack (19-3, 10-1) in South Bend, Indiana.

Freshman Olivia Miles had 13 points and reserve Sam Brunelle had 10 points off the bench to give second-year Irish coach Niele Ivey her biggest victory since taking over for Hall of Fame coach Muffet McGraw, who was in attendance.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

COLBY 76, TRINITY 69: The Mules (11-8, 4-4  NESCAC) went on a 21-10 run in the second half on their way to a win over the Bantams (10-7, 1-4) in Hartford, Connecticut.

Matt Hannah finished with 22 points, including 8 for 8 from the foul line, for Colby. Jonah Obi added 14 points and Noah Tyson had 11.

Donald Jorden, Jr. led Trinity with 20 points.

CREIGHTON 59, (17) UCONN 55: Ryan Hawkins scored 23 points and the Bluejays (13-7, 5-4 Big East) upset the Huskies (15-5, 6-3) in Hartford, Connecticut.

Hawkins hit eight of his 12 shots, including 4 of 5 from 3-point range for the Bluejays, who moved over .500 in conference play and snapped a two-game losing streak.

RIVIER 76, ST. JOSEPH’S 66:  The Raiders (7-11, 3-8 GNAC) took the lead for good at 54-53 on a Josef Bufourd layup and subsequent free throw and used a 10-0 to take control and defeat the Monks (5-14, 4-7) in Standish.

Miles Gillette poured in 32 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for Rivier, Nesta Roberts chipped in with 12 points and Nikolas Pignone added 10.

Drew Shea and Teagan Hynes led St. Joseph’s with 13 points apiece.

(10) KANSAS 70, IOWA STATE 61: David McCormack scored 14 points, Jalen Wilson had 13 rebounds, and the Jayhawks (18-3, 7-1 Big 12) defeated the Cyclones (16-6, 3-6) in Ames, Iowa.

McCormick made all seven of his shots and had 13 rebounds for the Jayhawks, who were without Ochai Agbaji. The Big 12′s leading scorer at 20.9 points per game, Agbaji didn’t play due to COVID-19 protocols. Wilson scored all 13 of his points in the second half.

(13) MICHIGAN STATE 65, MARYLAND 53: Malik Hall made a driving layup with 1.9 seconds left, and the Spartans (17-4, 8-2 Big Ten) survived a second-half rally by the Terrapins (11-1, 3-8) in College Park, Maryland.

Hall led the Spartans with 16 points, and Joey Hauser and Marcus Bingham Jr. had 10 apiece as Michigan State followed a home win over rival Michigan by doing just enough against the underachieving Terps.

Eric Ayala scored 15 points and Donta Scott had 14 for Maryland, which rallied from a 15-point second half deficit to tie the score twice within the final three minutes.

(22) TENNESSEE 90, TEXAS A&M 80: Kennedy Chandler scored 16 points, Olivier Nkamhoua added 15 and the Volunteers (15-6, 6-3 SEC) beat the Aggies (15-7, 4-5) in Knoxville, Tennessee.

UCONN: The University of Connecticut said it has complied with a recent arbitration ruling and has paid former men’s basketball coach Kevin Ollie more than $11.1 million.

Arbitrator Mark Irvings ruled last month that Ollie had been fired improperly under the school’s agreement with the American Association of University Professors, of which Ollie was a member. He noted the school had past NCAA violations in the men’s and women’s programs without going as far as firing the coaches.

LOUISVILLE: The school’s athletic board executive committee has approved a new contract for men’s basketball interim coach Mike Pegues that includes a guaranteed bonus of $340,000 and other incentives.

Pegues, whose interim status won’t change, took over the Cardinals for the second time last Wednesday after head coach Chris Mack and the school agreed to part ways.

Pegues guided Louisville (11-10, 5-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) to a 5-1 start while Mack was suspended and began his second stint with a 74-65 loss to No. 9 Duke on Saturday.

MEN’S HOCKEY

COLBY 3, CONN. COLLEGE 3 (OT): Brian Sanzone scored an unassisted goal midway through the third period and the Mules (11-3-1, 8-2-1 NESCAC) skated to a tie with the Camels (5-8-2, 4-6-1) in New London, Connecticut.

Colby took a 1-0 lead 2:32 into the second on a goal by Jack Sullivan. Kei Yasuda and Paul Capozzi scored before the end of the period to give Connecticut College the lead. Justin Grillo tied it for Colby in the third, but Anthony Quatieri gave the Camels the lead back just under three minutes later.

Andy Beran made 29 saves for Colby, while Michael McHale had 26 saves for Connecticut College.

U. OF NEW ENGLAND 5, WENTWORTH 0: Austin Morgan scored two goals and Tyler Seltenreich had a goal and an assist as the Nor’easters (11-3-1, 10-3-1 CCC) used a three-goal second period to pull away from the Leopards (4-13-2, 3-11-1) in Biddeford.

Chris Jones and Justin Dixson also scored. Billy Girard made 19 saves

Will Oliver finished with 30 saves for Wentworth.

FOOTBALL

USC: Quarterback Caleb Williams is transferring to Southern California, following Coach Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma to the Trojans.

Williams posted his long-awaited announcement on social media with a video that included the former five-star recruit in a USC uniform and famous Trojans fan Snoop Dogg rapping.
