Husson University will host a series of online, off-campus and on-campus events designed to help alumni know how much they’re valued and appreciated.

“Husson is built on a foundation of excellence constructed by our alumni,” said Christine Mihan, director of alumni relations, in a Jan. 28 news release. “Their support has made Husson University one of Maine’s leading educators. This week is dedicated to thanking the many alumni who’ve helped create new learning opportunities for students and assisted the next generation of successful professionals to reach their career goals.”

The week kicked off with an in-person event at Smoke and Steel in Bangor on Monday, Jan. 31. Sponsored by Husson’s Bangor Alumni Board, the event provided attendees with the opportunity to network with fellow alumni and meet the new Dean of the College of Health and Pharmacy James D. Nash.

The event continued on Wednesday, Feb. 2 when the Student Alumni Association hosted an on-campus event where current students can learn what it means to be an alumna/alumnus of Husson University and test their trivia skills.

Two days later, on Friday, Feb. 4, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., the university’s Southern Maine Alumni Board will conclude the week with an in-person event at the Broadway Sea Dog

The Upcycle Challenge asks students in ecomaine’s communities to use items that ordinarily would have been disposed of, to make all-new, functional ones and submit them by Friday, March 18. From the submissions, ecomaine’s Outreach and Recycling Committee will select a group of finalists, based on the incorporation of post-consumer materials, the ingenuity and functionality of the new creation, inclusion of students in the process, as well as the approval from a teacher or advisor.

Following the determination of finalists, the designs will be voted on by the public through Earth Day.

In the past, the Upcycle Challenge has seen entries including:

A working chandelier made from old plastic bottles.
A bike rack made from old bicycles.
Clothing fashioned from plastic, old fabric, and other materials.
Old clothing turned into hair scrunchies.
Furniture from old tires.
Movie projectors made from all kinds of would-be-junk materials.

“We continue to be so impressed by the creativity of these students and their designs,” said Matt Grondin, ecomaine’s communications manager, in an email. “We’re excited to see what this round of sustainably-themed designs has in store.”
