Sen. Susan Collins recently described President Biden’s pledge to nominate a woman of color to the Supreme Court as “clumsy at best.” In the same interview, Maine’s senior senator refused to answer a simple question: Will you support former President Donald Trump for president in 2024?

Ah, the Collins two-step. Vote to convict Trump on impeachment charges in February 2021, and, 12 months later, refuse to demonstrate the courage of few others in her party (in the House, mostly) to say that she doesn’t support the man who led an attempted coup.

Collins’ equivocation and sophistry are, well, clumsy at best. The danger to our democracy doesn’t lie with those who attempt to undermine it as much as it does with those who tolerate it.
