Kennebunk Savings recently named Sherrelle Riquinha and Melissa Gilpatrick as branch managers in Berwick and North Berwick, respectively.

Sherrelle Riquinha has joined the bank as branch manager in Berwick and Melissa Gilpatrick is assuming the role in North Berwick.

“We’re excited to bring Sherrelle and Melissa on board,” said Jennifer K. Johnson, senior customer experience manager, in an email. “Our customers and our team members are really going to benefit from their breadth of experience.”

According to the bank, Riquinha comes from a wide-ranging background including experience in retail training management and the U.S. Army. She’s acclimating herself to her new market by working the drive-up line to learn her customers’ faces, names and which ones bring their dogs along.

Gilpatrick, who has two decades of management experience, said she is passionate about working with people. “When I help a customer, I just want to put a smile on their face,” Gilpatrick said in a Jan. 24 news release. “I want what they thought would be a challenging banking situation to resolve more easily than they thought it could.”

“It’s a testament to our reputation in the area that we can continue to attract such talent,” said Johnson. “We’re grateful to the residents of the Berwicks for talking us up to their friends.”

York County Audubon sponsors Hog Island educator’s scholarship

York County Audubon is seeking an educator or community leader to participate in a one-week program on Hog Island off mid-coast Maine in July. The organization will sponsor one participant who can benefit from the Hog Island experience and use it to teach others. Complete information is available at www.yorkcountyaudubon.org/scholarships and applications are due by March 15.

The program is titled “Sharing Nature: An Educator’s Week” and will run from July 17-22. Program details and descriptions are available at http://hogisland.audubon.org/sharing-nature-educator-s-week. The scholarship will pay 70 percent of the recipient’s cost for program tuition, room and board.

According to a Feb. 3 news release from York County Audubon, “Since 1936, some of the world’s most well-known and highly respected naturalists have come to Hog Island and inspired thousands to learn about and protect birds and the environment. Roger Tory Peterson was among the first teachers on the 335-acre island. Rachel Carson described her visit to Hog Island in her landmark book, “Silent Spring.” Kenn Kaufman, only 9 years old when he read Peterson’s account of Hog lsland, is now an international authority on birds and nature.”

The Hog Island scholarship is dedicated to June Ficker, bird bander extraordinaire, who shared her love for birds with thousands of York County residents and visitors. York County Audubon is a chapter of Maine Audubon.

KPort Pond Hockey Classic on tap

Kennebunkport Parks and Recreation will host the aecond annual KPort Pond Hockey Classic. The Classic is comprised of two divisions competing on separate days at the Kennebunkport Ice Rink found at 25 School St.

On Saturday, Feb. 12 (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) the Rec Division will compete. The more competitive Open Division will follow on Sunday, Feb. 13 (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.).

Spectators are welcome at the event that will be catered by Kitchen Chicks Catering, offering food, as well as beer and wine. As a bonus, there will be complimentary hot chocolate and cookies for children.

Participants and spectators will be able to warm up by one of the fire pits supervised by Kennebunk Portside Rotary Club. The club helped fund the purchase of the ice rink.

Winners of each division will take home KPort Pond Hockey Classic trophies, thanks to Saco Bay Orthopaedics.

Library announces February exhibit

Kennebunk Free Library announced its February 2022 Speers Gallery exhibit, Through the Eyes of the Young, featuring the art work of students from The New School and the School Around Us. The show features pieces of different media, all created by students ages 5-18.

The New School is a democratic high school located in Kennebunk, and School Around Us is a holistic learning community for ages 5-14 in Arundel. In 2016, The New School was featured in a one-school art show at Full Circle Gallery in Biddeford, and showed their work in 2017 at the Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk and in 2020 and 2021 at the Speers Gallery at the Kennebunk Free Library.

This year the work of students includes photography from The New School and self-portraits from the School Around Us.

The public is invited to view the exhibit in the library’s Speers Gallery through Feb. 28  at 112 Main St., Kennebunk, during regular library hours when the gallery is not in use for library programs. For more information, visit www.kennebunklibrary.org.

Free February on tap at museum

The Brick Store Museum will open its doors for free for the entire month of February during its Free February program. Visitors to the museum will be the first to see the Jane Morgan: In My Style exhibition that opened Feb. 1.

“The museum preserves the history, art and culture of the Kennebunks,” said Cynthia Walker, director, in a Jan. 19 news release. “Exploring what we all share allows us to grow closer together. Especially in the dark, cold days of February, we hope everyone will take advantage of free admission this month and add your own stories to the museum.”

Though the museum depends on admission sales as part of its operating income, offering Free February gains much more than financial support – it gains friends and new learners, said Walker.

Exhibitions on view in February include Jane Morgan: In My Style and Who Makes History?, an inspection of recent town archaeological research helping to illustrate the lives of freed enslaved people who lived in the town between 1780 and 1830; and the work being done by the Cape Porpoise Archaeological Alliance, discovering the thousands-of-years-old history of the Wabanaki in southern Maine.

The Brick Store Museum is open six days per week: Tuesday – Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.;  Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. From Feb. 1 through Feb. 28, the museum will be open for free.

Jane Morgan: In My Style opens at Brick Store Museum

For the first time ever, over 30 performance gowns selected from the private collection of Jane Morgan, an internationally-known stage and screen star in entertainment’s Golden Age, will debut at the Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk.

The exhibition, titled Jane Morgan: In My Style, will run through May 21. The collection spans the singer’s stage, screen, and TV career from the 1950s-1980s. Morgan, known for her song “Fascination,” has a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame; twice sang the winning song at the Oscars; received numerous awards and accolades across her international singing career, and is well known for the special gowns she wore for every appearance, including singing and performing for royalty, including Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana; Heads of State such as French President, Charles de Gaulle; Presidents John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush.

York County Audubon schedules snowy owl presentation

York County Audubon will host award-winning author and photographer Paul Bannick for a Zoom presentation on Tuesday, Feb. 15. Bannick will provide a visual exploration of the life history of the snowy owl, based upon his 2020 book, “Snowy Owl: A Visual Natural History.” The session is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Through dozens of never-before-published images of the “Arctic Owl,” Bannick will describe how they survive, breed and live alongside other wildlife on the Arctic tundra and in wintering areas further south. He will also look at how they compare to other North American owls and what people can do to help them thrive. Bannick’s photographs illustrate behaviors, such as courtship displays, that are heretofore only available as illustrations elsewhere. The images are complemented by decades of first-hand experience with the birds during all seasons of the year and reflect the latest science.

“If your average picture is worth a thousand words, a Paul Bannick wildlife photograph is worth 20,000,” said Ted Williams, former editor of Audubon Magazine. “Having worked with wildlife photographers for articles in Audubon, Smithsonian, Sierra, National Wildlife and other magazines for 45 years, I have yet to encounter one who better captures the magic and beauty of the natural world.”

Library trustees plan information night

The Kennebunk Free Library board of trustees  has scheduled an information night for Tuesday, Feb. 15. The Zoom session begins at 6 p.m. For the meeting link, email kfl@kennebunkfreelibrary.org.

The board of trustees are seeking new members. The information night is an opportunity to ask questions and learn what being a library trustee entails.
