Re: “Jan. 6 insurrection: GOP’s national committee calls attack ‘legitimate political discourse’ ” (Feb. 5, Page A1):
Really? If so, I want to know which Republican senators and representatives stayed around that day to discuss issues with “ordinary citizens who engaged in legitimate political discourse,” in Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel’s words.
I watched the events that day on television. I saw damage, riot, violence and chaos. I saw senators and representatives fleeing for their lives and hiding wherever they could. I know that some police officers died or were seriously injured and/or traumatized as a result of the events that day. If that is the Republican National Committee’s idea of “legitimate political discourse,” heaven help us.
To heal the country, protect the rule of law and prevent further violence, we need to understand what happened that day, why it happened and who was responsible. Covering up or sugarcoating the events of Jan. 6, 2021, as the Republican National Committee is doing, does not serve the nation. As Rep. Liz Cheney said, “History will be their judge.”
