BUFFALO, N.Y. — Austin Watson scored the tiebreaker in the third period and Zach Sanford and Brady Tkachuk added goals as the Ottawa Senators beat the Buffalo Sabres 3-1 on Thursday night

Nick Holden had two assists and Anton Forsberg made 22 saves as the Senators improved to 5-2-1 in their last seven road games and 5-5-0 in their last 10 overall.

Kyle Okposo scored for the Sabres. Craig Anderson stopped 25 of 27 shots against his former team. Buffalo had won two in a row and had earned a point in three straight.

Watson deflected Holden’s slap shot past Anderson for the go-ahead goal with 9:09 remaining in the third period, breaking an 18-game scoreless streak.

Sanford tied it for the Senators with 3:56 remaining in the second period. Former Sabre Tyler Ennis found Sanford alone in front of the net, where he moved the puck to his backhand and tucked it around Anderson’s glove for his eighth goal.

Tkachuk added an empty-net goal in the closing seconds, his 16th of the season.

Okposo gave the Sabres the lead on a power play with 6:23 left in the first period. Taking a long pass from Rasmus Asplund to set up a breakaway, Okposo beat Forsberg with a move from the right slot. Okposo’s 11th goal was his third in four games.

MAPLE LEAFS 4, PENGUINS 1: Morgan Rielly and Auston Matthews each had a goal and an assist, and Jack Campbell made 45 saves to lead Toronto over visiting Pittsburgh.

David Kampf and Michael Bunting also scored for Toronto, which was outshot 46-29 but won its second straight. Evgeni Malkin scored for Pittsburgh. Tristan Jarry had 25 saves.

Matthews ran face-first into the crossbar of the Maple Leafs net as he pursued Penguins captain Sidney Crosby with 13:19 remaining in the third period. Doubled over and holding his face, Matthews left the game but returned with five minutes left.

CAPITALS 5, FLYERS 3: Garnet Hathaway scored two goals in a span of less than two minutes late in the third period and Washington rallied late to win in Philadelphia.

Joe Snively, Michal Kempny and John Carlson also scored for the Capitals, who won their fifth in a row on the road to improve to 16-5-4 away from Washington.

Gerry Mayhew scored a pair of goals and Travis Sanheim had a goal and an assist for Philadelphia, which has lost four in a row. The Flyers played the first contest of a club-record eight-game homestand. They won’t hit the road again until March 10 at Florida.

CANADIENS 3, BLUES 2 (OT): Cole Caufield forced overtime with 8.7 seconds left in regulation and then scored the winner in overtime to help Montreal snap a 10-game skid with a victory over visiting St. Louis.

Paul Byron also scored and Samuel Montembeault stopped 26 shots for the Canadiens, whose last win came on Jan. 18 at Dallas. The victory was the first for interim coach Martin St. Louis, who was 0-3-0 since taking over for the fired Dominique Ducharme.

NOTES

PREDATORS: The NHL announced Thursday it has fined Nashville Coach John Hynes $25,000 for inappropriate conduct at the end of a 4-1 loss to Washington.

Hynes was assessed a game misconduct at the end of Tuesday night’s loss in Nashville. It was the Predators’ third straight loss, and they also had four penalties before the game misconduct given to Hynes.

The Predators currently sit in the first wild-card spot in the Western Conference. They lead the NHL for the most minor (192) and major (33) penalties, and their average of 12.9 penalty minutes per game also is a league-high.
