Those who counted themselves among Tom Brokaw’s Greatest Generation fought and died in a struggle against fascism. They thought they had won that battle. Unfortunately, they had not. The fascist ideology, born of greed and a craving for power, simply went to ground until Donald Trump, who has made it clear that battlefield must be revisited. What would those who fought so hard and lost so much say to us if they could speak?

We cannot risk simply hoping this threat to our democracy will go away. It has been said that hope is just a wish that someone else will do what must be done and that we’d be much better off without hope. The longer we wait with hope, the stronger this threat becomes.

President Biden should appoint a group of constitutional experts to meet for perhaps two to four weeks to recommend immediate courses of action for the Office of the President, the Department of Justice and the U.S. Congress before the latter can fall under the control of those who are beholden to and/or who fear Trump. Let it not be said that the Greatest Generation fought and died in vain.
