I write to remind my fellow Portlanders to vote in the upcoming election. An important vote is coming up regarding the organization of our city’s governmental system. Progressive Portland and Ethan Strimling (the ex-mayor) have inserted their influence in establishing a charter commission to change our form of government.

I’ll barely mention their first suggestion: to increase – substantially – the pay of elected officials. Some of the members of the commission hold very extreme views.

The title of city manager sounds boring in name and position; it is more administration than political. This is intended to be so. Good government should be somewhat boring. Politics is hot and exciting. But it is not a good idea to have money in the hands of elected officials. It is a tried and true recipe for corruption.
