There is a glaring oversight in the Feb. 16 editorial, “Our View: We can build roads that work for everyone” (Page A6). Every time I read about someone hit by a car, with the exception of crosswalks, I wonder if they were walking with their back to traffic.

I rarely see people in Maine walking facing traffic. Don’t they know? Remind them to do everything to ensure their safety. In addition to walking facing traffic, it’s smart to wear reflective clothing at night. This is also wise for crossing streets at night.

I’ve been a runner for many years and always ran or walked facing traffic and wearing a reflective vest at dusk, dawn or night. I now walk on Back Cove and wear a light. People must be so sure drivers see them or don’t think about it. I see so many people wearing dark clothes and walking with their back to traffic. It’s dumb. Everyone who drives knows how hard it can be to see people in the road, day and night.

Take every opportunity to remind people. Parents should teach children. Schools have an important message to give students over and over, year after year, in all grades. I learned it at a very young age and never forget.
