The Portland Sea Dogs broke a tie game with four runs in the sixth inning, two scoring on bases-loaded hit by pitches, to beat the Somerset Patriots 7-4 Wednesday night at Hadlock Field.
The Sea Dogs have won four straight.
Somerset took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth on a two-run homer by Andres Chaparro.
Portland got a run back in the bottom of the inning on a homer by Wil Dalton, but Elijah Downs’ homer in the fifth restored the Patriots’ two-run lead.
The Sea Dogs tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on David Hamilton’s two-run triple.
Portland took its first lead in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run homer by Pedro Castellanos. Two more runs scored when Tyler Dearden was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and later when Dalton was hit by a pitch to score Christian Koss.
Portland starter Victor Santos (4-4) pitched six innings, allowing seven hits and three runs. He walked none and struck out one.
SOCCER
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara could be fit for the Champions League final against Real Madrid despite missing training because of injury.
The Spain international came off with an Achilles tendon injury in the 3-1 win over Wolverhampton on Sunday but Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp said the problem “was not that bad.”
“He could be able to train tomorrow (Thursday),” Klopp said. “It’s surprisingly good (news).”
AC MILAN: Forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic had surgery on his left knee and faces up to eight months on the sideline – if he decides to continue his playing career.
Ibrahimovic missed large portions of Milan’s title-winning campaign with injury. The 40-year-old Swede made 23 appearances in Serie A, although most of them were off the bench.
Milan said the knee operation, which was performed in France, had been scheduled for a while “to definitively resolve the joint’s instability.”
CONFERENCE LEAGUE FINAL: Roma claimed its first European title in more than six decades to crown Jose Mourinho’s first season coaching in the Italian capital.
Nicolo Zaniolo scored in the first half, goalkeeper Rui Patricio made some big saves in the second and Roma beat Feyenoord 1-0 to win the inaugural edition of the third-tier Europa Conference League.
It’s Roma’s first European trophy since winning the 1961 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup – a tournament considered to be the precursor to the UEFA Cup and Europa League. It’s also the first title of any kind for Roma since winning the 2008 Italian Cup.
CYCLING
GIRO d’ITALIA: Race favorite Richard Carapaz maintained his slim overall lead after a tough 17th stage which was won by Santiago Buitrago for his first grand tour victory.
Carapaz remained three seconds ahead of 2020 runner-up Jai Hindley – with just four days of racing remaining – after both crossed the line together at the end of the 104-mile route from Ponte di Legno to Lavarone, which packed in almost 13,000 feet of climbing.
AUTO RACING
INDY 500: The Indianapolis 500 will be presented by Gainbridge for the next several years in a multiyear contract extension announced with the online investment platform.
Gainbridge is an Indianapolis company that in 2019 became presenting sponsor of the most iconic motorsports race in the world. The initial partnership was a four-year deal. Gainbridge CEO Dan Towriss would not reveal terms of the extension.
BASKETBALL
WNBA: The Indiana Fever fired Coach Marianne Stanley with the team off to a 2-7 start in her third season and promoted assistant Carlos Knox to interim coach.
Stanley, 68, brought a Hall of Fame resume to the Fever bench, but her teams won just 14 games in a little more than two seasons.
Stanley was in the final year of her contract. Knox was a star college player at IUPUI and played for the Indiana Pacers from 1998-99. He was named an assistant on Stanley’s staff in 2021.
