Anyone doing research into guns, gun violence and gun regulation realizes very quickly that these are complex political and policy issues. Here in Maine, the biggest gun problem is the number of suicides committed with handguns, as documented by a recent state study. In response, funding has been increased for mental health services and state legislation has been proposed.

Left unaddressed are mass shootings and the use of military grade weapons. We can’t assume that a Sandy Hook-type event can’t happen in Maine and, frankly, with our virtual absence of gun regulation, it is just a matter of time before it’s our turn. An outright ban would be ideal but it doesn’t seem to be in the cards. A different, outside-the-box proposal is needed.

The Southern Poverty Law Center monitors hate groups and notifies law enforcement. There needs to be a similar organization that does the same with those who plan violence. The activities of individuals who frequent social media sites including Twitch, 4chan, 8chan and Discord can be monitored and reported to law enforcement.

We know these online sites can be monitored because we always learn about the shooter’s online activity after the fact. We need to learn about it before the fact. If it can be done for hate groups, it can be done for mentally ill persons.
