I was deeply saddened by Tribune News Service columnist Martin Schram’s July 23 op-ed (“No nation is immune from climate change danger,” Page A5), in which he described some of the consequences of ignoring early warnings about the threats from global warming.

In his column, he had a quote from United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres that shocked and frightened me: “Half of humanity is in the danger zone, from floods, droughts, extreme storms and wildfires. No nation is immune. Yet we continue to feed our fossil fuel addiction. … We have a choice. Collective action or collective suicide. It is in our hands.”

Here are, once again, some actions that can be taken by people in industrial nations to avoid collective suicide: Drive only when necessary; fly only for special occasions and emergencies; reduce meat consumption to as close to zero as possible, and purchase only things we absolutely need.

Perhaps we Mainers can start this international effort.
