What’s that they say, “The more things change, the more they stay the same?” Summer is like that for us, here at Libby Library. It’s, mostly, the same stuff each day, but it’s also new every moment. New faces. New challenges. New experiences.

Speaking of new, our new item shelves are almost always rotating. We are continually adding to our already substantial collection, and so if you haven’t been to the library recently, be sure to stop in and check out our new arrivals (for all, books and DVDs, both fiction and non-fiction). Card holders can check out four new books at a time with two weeks to read and enjoy them before they’re due back. As always, DVDs are a one week borrow and a limit of six.

Mid-summer is the perfect time to refresh other things around our library, too. If you’ve been enjoying the Staff Picks, on July 19 a whole new set of books will be available for your reading enjoyment. Our well-read staff has some eclectic tastes of reading material. Stop by and check out what we’re reading.

While most folks like to take time off from serious endeavors during the summer, it can be the perfect time to learn something new. To that end, we have our very own Libby University. Check out the series of DVD courses on just about any topic you might be interested in studying from the History of European Art to Neuroscience in Everyday Life. After a day of frolicking in the sea foam, some light studying sounds like a good way to spend these hot summer nights.

While mom and dad are perusing the Libby University offerings or the new arrivals, kids can be eating for free. All kids under the age of 18 can enjoy a free lunch here at the library from 11:30 a.m. to noon, Tuesday through Friday, followed by a fun activity, like Legos. I am not a dine-in kind of person, and for those, who like me, prefer carry-out, the free lunches can be to-go and enjoyed off-site. Lunches will be offered until Au.t 12.

Don’t forget to stop by the library and let us know what you’re reading. The summer reading program is in full swing. Some of us have even earned a few charms for our keychain or a Read Bead for the kiddoes’ necklaces. It’s not too late to sign up and jump on the reading wagon. We still have lots of summer left, and lots of time to enjoy a good book, both for kids and adults!

And if you haven’t heard, we’ve added to our free pass collection. Libby now has half price passes for the Children’s Museum and Theatre of Maine in Portland, as well as free passes for the Maine Wildlife Park in Gray, and free passes that are also available for the Portland Museum of Art and Southworth Planetarium (at the University of Southern Maine Campus in Portland).

Summer time … and the living’s easy! Here at Libby Library, simple, easy, and fun is just how we like it. As our favorite Aardvark always says, “Having fun isn’t hard when you’ve got a library card!”

Did you know? All property owners and full or part-time employees of year-round businesses are eligible for a free library card at the Libby Library. If you don’t have your card yet, why not?

Wendy Brown has lived in Old Orchard Beach since before the turn of the century. One of her first stops after purchasing her house was at the library for a card.
